La Trinidad notes 70 percent decrease in dengue cases

La Trinidad, Benguet (6 November) -- Dengue cases in this capital town has decreased by 70 percent since August this year.
Mayor Gregorio Abalos attributed the decrease of cases to the concerted efforts being undertaken by the community in partnership with the municipal government and the Department of Health.
Abalos said that the 9 o'clock habit that the municipal government started was a big factor in the decrease of dengue cases.
The 9 o'clock habit is a clean-up drive that was started by the municipal officials in the different barangays. This is focused on the destruction of possible dengue breeding grounds such as gutters, tires, bottles, and stagnant water and even creeks and canals.
Abalos stressed that the 9 o'clock habit clean up drive done every Saturdays by the barangay officials and their constituents will continue not only for the prevention of dengue and other diseases but also for the promotion of cleanliness in the different communities in the municipality.
Abalos added that the municipal government together with the DOH has also strengthened the Barangay Health Response Teams to make people in the barangays be aware of the dengue disease, its signs and symptoms and how to prevent it.
In August, the DOH reported barangays Poblacion, Pico, Betag, Balili, Bahong, Alapang and Puguis as hot spots due to rapid increase of dengue cases.
Dengue cases in Cordillera now stand at 5,869 with 14 deaths, a 247 percent increase compared to the 1,689 cases recorded during the same period last year. Per provincial breakdown, recorded cases in Abra stand at 357, 159 in Apayao, 1,236 in Baguio City, Benguet - 1048, Ifugao - 1,048, Kalinga- 989 and Mountain Province - 839. 193 other non-CAR cases were also treated in various hospitals in the region.
Majority of the reported cases are of the younger age brackets with 39 percent coming from 11-20 years age group and 27 percent comes from 1-10 years old.
According to DOH Dengue Coordinator Dr. Alexei Marrero, dengue cases in Cordillera is down
from a peak of 600 cases a week recorded in August to about 150 cases a week in October.
Dr Marrero also confirmed that though there was no dengue outbreak reported, clustering of cases are still being noted in some areas especially in the municipalities of Lamut, Kiangan, Mayoyao, Lagawe and Banaue in Ifugao; Tabuk in Kalinga and Sadanga in Mountain Province.
For Benguet clustering of cases were monitored in some areas in Itogon, La Trinidad and Mankayan. For Baguio City, clustering of cases were also noted in barangay Irisan, Asin, Bakakeng Central and North, Fairview, Kias, Loacan Proper, QM upper, San Luis, San Vicente and St. Joseph Village.
