Dengue cases decline in first 15 days of 2011

MANILA, Philippines (PNA) -- Dengue cases reported to the different sentinel hospitals from January 1 to January 15, 2011 reached 1,340 cases, or 66.19 percent lower compared to the same period last year (3,963).

In a dengue update released by the Department of Health (DOH), most of the cases came from the National Capital Region (NCR) with 585 cases or 43.7 percent; Region IV-A (23.8 percent) and Region III (12.6 percent).

Three deaths were reported in the NCR, Region VII-A (1), and Region 3 (1), with majority of the cases among males (53.7 percent) whose ages range from 1 to 20 years old...

Iloilo records 25 dengue cases

ILOILO CITY, Feb. 15 (PIA)--- Provincial Health Officer Patrica Grace Trabado urged the public to continue the cleaning of surroundings to get rid of the mosquito vectors that thrive in stagnant waters, as 25 dengue cases in Iloilo province was recorded from January to February 12, this year.

Trabado said that the Iloilo Provincial Health Office record shows that the municipality of Dumangas leads with six dengue cases followed by Oton- 3, Passi City-2,Tigbauan-2, Tubungan -2 and one each for the municipalities of Cabatuan, Calinog, Carles, Guimbal, Igbaras, Lemery, Miag-ao, San Enrique, San Joaquin and San Miguel...

THE Provincial Health Office (PHO) on Tuesday said dengue cases in Misamis Oriental appeared to be decreasing for the first two months compared to same period last year.

Provincial Health chief Ignacio Moreno did not give specific figures but said the cases in the province is minimal.

‘Far worse’ dengue outbreak seen

MANILA, Philippines—The Department of Health on Wednesday warned that the country may face a “far worse” dengue outbreak this year with health experts observing a dramatic early peak in the number of cases of the deadly fever.

At least 13,281 dengue patients have already been admitted in hospitals across the country from January to February this year, with 63 deaths so far, reported Health Assistant Secretary Gerry Baguyo during the Dengue Summit held in Manila Wednesday.

Baguyo said the country experienced the worst outbreak of dengue last year with more than 135,000 documented cases, exceeding the record-high infection rates in 1998.

Two dengue deaths

Two persons have died from dengue in Negros Occidental this year, Dr. Ernell Tumimbang, Provincial Health Officer, said yesterday.

Tumimbang said there have also been 18 cases of dengue reported in the province from January 1 to March 19 this year compared to 30 in the same period last year.

Dengue disease ranked 1st in Cebu City in 2010

CEBU CITY, 22 April (PIA) - Dengue disease ranked 1st in Cebu City with 3,172 cases and 22 deaths in 2010 with only two (2) barangays, Mabini and Paril with zero cases of the dengue disease.

This is per hospital surveillance case distribution list and Disease Surveillance Report (DSR) provided by Asst City Epidemiologist Durinda Macasocol from the City Health Department (CHD) to Philippine Information Agency (PIA).

Compared to 2009, the dengue disease has 2,256 cases and 41 deaths. Dengue disease in 2010 is 37.19 percent higher than in 2009.

The records of the City Epidemiology Statistics and Surveillance Unit (CESSU) showed that the incidence rate of dengue disease is 3:72 or four (4) cases for every population and the case fatality rate is 0.694 or 1 death for every 100 cases.

Most of those of who are affected of dengue are males with 51.7 percent and the age range of dengue patients are from three (3) months to 81 years old, according to the report.

Of the 22 dengue deaths last year, three (3) came from Barangay Basak and two (2) each are from barangays Tejero, Pasil and Ermita.

Tisa, Punta Princesa, Lahug, Mabolo, Quiot, Bulacao, Busay, Pardo, Calamba, Buhisan, Zapatera, Malubog and Babag have one (1) dengue death from each of these barangays.

The report has also listed the top 20 barangays in Cebu City with the highest number of dengue cases which are Guadalupe with 257, Tisa with 174, Labangon with 144, Punta Princesa with 124, Talamban with 123, Lahug with 119, Mambaling with 105.

Barangays with below 100 dengue cases included; Basak San Nicolas with 94, Mabolo with 91, Capitol with 88, Kamputhaw with 86, Apas with 83, Sambag 1 with 80, Sambag 11 with 78, Basak Pardo with 75, Tejero with 66, Duljo with 65, Pasil with 64, Bacayan with 61 and Quiot with 55.

The barangays listed with the lowest dengue cases are Binaliw and Pamutan with one (1) case each while barangays Taptap, Sinsin and Sudlon II has two (2) cases each.

CESSU also made a tabulation of the incidence rates of the dengue disease in the 80 barangays of Cebu City and Barangay Malubog ranked first with an incident rate of 9.85.

The other barangays that are in the top ten (10) lists are: Sto. Nino with 8.70, Kamagayan with 8.26, Pasil with 8.11, Sta Cruz with 7.51, San Antonio with 7.30, Parian with 6.68, Capitol with 6.56, Kasambagan with 6.53 and Cogon Ramos with 6.36.

The barangays that have a low incidence rate of the dengue disease in the lists are Binaliw with 0.33, Pamutan with 0.66, Sinsin with 0.82 and Kinasang-an with 0.83.

As per data, the months of August and September last year have the highest number of dengue cases in all of the barangays in Cebu City afflicted with the disease. (PIA-Cebu/JSM)

DOH 2 intensifies campaign to stop dengue upsurge

TUGUEGARAO CITY, April 26 (PIA) --- To address the alarming increase of dengue cases in the region, the Department of Health regional office has intensified its information campaign on dengue prevention and control highlighting the 4S Laban sa Dengue program which stands for: Search and destroy, Self-protection measures, Seek early consultation and Say no to indiscriminate fogging, especially in areas which recorded high incidence of dengue cases.

Based on the report of the Regional Epidemiology & Surveillance Unit 2, from January 1 to April 9, 2011, a total of 700 dengue fever cases with three deaths were gathered from the different disease reporting units in the region.

Compared to the same period last year, an increase of 87% in cases and 33% in deaths was noted. Case fatality rate is .4% and occurrence of cases is above the alert and epidemic threshold levels established in the past five (5) years.

Municipalities and cities which have the most number of cases are Solano, 93; Santiago City, 68; Tuguegarao City, 61; Bambang, 44; and Bayombong, 34.

As to province, Nueva Vizcaya recorded the highest number of cases with 39%; Cagayan, 33% and Isabela, 26% with one death recorded from each.

The report also disclosed that the age of cases ranges from three months to 82 years old, median age is 13 years and 56% more males were affected.

As to type of dengue, 59.6% or 417 were classified as Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever (DHF); 40% or 280 as Dengue Fever (DF) and .4% or 3 as Dengue Shock Syndrome (DSS).

DOH officials also emphasized early diagnosis, consultation and treatment to prevent spread of dengue hemorrhagic fever which can be fatal.

The symptoms of typical uncomplicated dengue usually start within five to six days after a person has been bitten by an infected mosquito. Some common symptoms are: high fever that may reach 105 degrees Fahrenheit; severe headache; pain behind the eye; severe joint pain; severe muscle pain; nausea; vomiting and rash that may appear over most of the body three to four days after the fever begins.

People contract dengue fever from the bite of an infected Aedes mosquito and mosquitoes become infected when they bite infected humans, and later transmit infection to other people as they bite. #TCB/PIA 2

Manila, Philippines - The number of dengue cases in the country is nearing the 20,000 mark, the Department of Health (DOH) said yesterday.

A report from the National Epidemiology Center (NEC) showed that from Jan. 1 to April 2, a total of 17,228 individuals have contracted dengue.

The figure is 0.33 percent higher than the 17,172 cases recorded during the same period in 2010.
However, Dr. Lyndon Lee Suy, DOH program manager for Emerging and Re-emerging Diseases, said the number of dengue cases by the week is on the decline.

?If you look at the figure (by the weeks), it?s going down,? he said. ?That can be expected because it is summer. But the total figure in general is high.?

Lee Suy said the DOH is hopeful that the public would take advantage of summer to prepare for expected further increase in dengue cases during the rainy days.

The public should start getting rid of used tires, empty cans and bottle caps that can hold water, which can become breeding sites of dengue-causing mosquitoes, he added.

Records showed that this year?s death toll from dengue is 12 so far, on pace with the 36 fatalities in 2010.

MANILA, Philippines ? The number of dengue cases in the country has reached to 18,885, including 114 deaths, the latest surveillance update of the National Epidemiology Center covering the period January 1 to April 9 showed.

The surveillance report said that the NCR, Central Luzon and CALABARZON remain as the regions with the highest number of dengue cases.

DOH warns vs complacency on dengue

MANILA, Philippines - With 115 individuals dying from dengue this year, Health Secretary Enrique Ona yesterday warned the public not to get complacent about the disease during this summer.

Ona said there should be no let up in efforts to eradicate mosquitoes because dengue is a year-round disease.

?At any time, you?ll see a dengue case in any area. Dengue is always there so we should continue cleaning our surroundings,? he said in a press briefing.

Records of the Department of Health (DOH) showed that from January to April 9, 2011, 18,885 dengue cases had been recorded, including 115 deaths.

This figure is 5.24 percent higher compared to the 17,945 cases recorded during the same period last year.

From January to the end of April this year, the DoH-CAR was able to record 348 dengue fever cases in the different parts of the region and that the same is 1.2 percent higher compared to the 344 dengue fever cases recorded by the agency during the same period last year.


Based on the reports from the different provinces, Kalinga recorded almost four folds increase in dengue cases with 91 (compared to 27 last year). For Abra from 18 last year it increased to 39 cases, for Baguio from 44 to 47 cases this year and Benguet from 61 to 62 cases this year.


Other provinces recorded decrease in cases, Apayao from 29 cases in 2010 to 11 this year, Ifugao from 105 in 2010 to 45 cases this year and Mountain Province from 44 to 23 cases.

Dengue claims 12 in WVisayas from Jan to May

ILOILO CITY, May 31 (PIA) -- The Department of Health reported that 12 deaths due to dengue fever were recorded from January 1 to May 21, 2011.


Dr. Joji Jimenez, regional dengue, malaria and rabies coordinator of DOH 6 said in a PIA interview that a total of 1,016 dengue cases were recorded this year as against 1730 cases reported in the same period last year with only 10 deaths.


Majority of the cases came from the province of Negros Occidental with 457 cases and four deaths, and Bacolod City with 191 cases and three deaths. The provinces of Antique, Capiz and Iloilo has one death each, while Iloilo City has two deaths.


Jimenez said that the January to May 21 dengue cases (1016) is 42 percent lower compared to the same period last year recorded at 1730.


Ages of cases ranged from five months to 81 years with median age of 11 years old, the DOH 6 Regional Epidemiology and Surveillance Unit (RESU) report disclosed.


The RESU report also showed that 55 percent were males, and forty percent of the cases belonged to the one to nine year-old age group.


The number of cases this year is still below the alert threshold, the RESU report disclosed.


Dr. Jimenez, on the other hand reminded the public to sustain the clean up activities in the surroundings to destroy the breeding grounds of mosquitoes and prevent the spread of mosquitoes that carry the dengue virus.(JCM/TWV/PIA6-Iloilo)

Dengue cases continue to rise - DOH

MANILA, June 1 (PIA) -- The Department of Health (DOH) recorded at least 22,903 dengue cases nationwide from January to May 7 this year, an eight percent increase compared to the same period last year.

Based on reports from various hospitals, most of the cases came from the National Capital Region- 6,732, Central Luzon - 4,181, and CALABARZON- 3,555.

In Metro Manila, Quezon City had the most - 1,694 - number of cases, followed by Manila -82, Kalookan City -775, Pasig -592, Valenzuela- 466, and Paranaque City - 407.

There were 141 deaths recorded (Case Fatality Rate-0.62 percent)...

PROVINCIAL Board Member Melvin Iba?ez, chairman of the committee on health, warned the public against the dengue virus with the onset of the rainy season.


He said the Provincial Government already reactivated the Negros Occidental Dengue Task Force and is ready to respond to calls for assistance as far as dengue is concern.



The dengue hotline (476-2471) is also reactivated and ready to receive calls concerning dengue cases 24 hours a day.


Iba?ez, who heads the task force, said that based on the pattern, a rise in dengue cases is expected from June to November this year.


Negros Occidental already recorded three deaths with 461 cases from January to May 2011. For the same period last year, there were with 535 cases with two fatalities.


This year?s casualties came from Barangay Mina-utok, Calatrava; Upper Nabatu-an, Barangay Balintawak, Escalante City and Hda. Carmen, Barangay Daga in Cadiz City.

DOH warns public on dengue, other rain-borne diseases

BAGUIO CITY, June 5 (PIA) -- The Department of Health (DOH) reiterates its warning to the public to take precautionary measures against dengue and other rainy day diseases during a kapihan forum last week.


According to DOH-CAR Local Health Support Services Division head Dr. Amelita Pangilinan, with the onset of rainy season, the DOH cautions the public against dengue and other rainy day diseases such as typhoid fever, measles, influenza like illnesses and food and water borne diseases.


?The public should watch out and be vigilant.For instance, after typhoon Chedeng, there was rain for about a week and this increased the breeding of dengue mosquitoes. The public should practice the 4S campaign (Search and Destroy, Seek early consultation, Self-protective measures, and Say no to indiscriminate fogging) and ensure that there would be no breeding grounds for dengue mosquitoes starting in their homes, surroundings, and the whole community,? Pangilinan said.



As a precautionary measure, Pangilinan advises the public to boost their immune system by eating a balanced diet including lots of fruits and vegetables, take vitamin C and have at least seven to eight hours sleep. In addition, people should manage their stress, keep themselves warm, observe cough ethics, and maintain a healthy lifestyle.



This June, the DOH leads the observance of Dengue Awareness Month, with the theme, ?Eskwelahan, Simbahan, Barangay, Palengke at Buong Komunidad, Sama-Sama Nating Sugpuin ang Dengue,? which aims to heighten awareness of the strategy to fight dengue by adopting the 4S Kontra Dengue.



In line with this, Health Secretary Enrique Ona directed all the Centers for Health Development (CHDs) in the country to coordinate with their respective local government unit (LGU counterparts) to encourage them to conduct a simultaneous dengue awareness activity with the Health Department.



Based on DOH data, from January to May 7, they recorded a total of 22,903 dengue cases nationwide. Pangilinan affirms that they have recorded 420 cases, which is slightly lower than the 472 cases recorded last year. (JDP/LD-PIA CAR)

At least five people in Negros Occidental have died due to dengue from January 1 to May 21 this year, Provincial Health Officer Dr. Ernell Tumimbang said.

According to a report of the news site Visayan Daily Star, Tumimbang said the number of persons hit by the deadly virus has dropped by 16 percent compared to the same period in 2010.

Tumimbang identified the dengue fatalities as:
Marlon Fernandez, 22, of Cadiz City;
Eva Jane Perez, 18, of Bago City;
Romeo Cogonon, 23, of Calatrava;
Cris Cleminia, five months old, of Bago City, and
Alejandro Gale, 59, of Escalante City.

Some 468 dengue patients were admitted to different private and public hospitals in Negros Occidental from January 1 to May 21 this year, 16 percent lower from the 558 cases in the same period last year.

However, only two deaths were reported in the same period last year.

The top 10 areas with the most dengue cases this year are Bago City with 87, San Carlos City with 57, Silay City with 30, Calatrava with 27, La Carlota City with 24, Talisay City with 24, Victorias City with 23, Cadiz City with 18, Sagay City with 18 and Himamaylan City with 16.

Cauayan and Candoni had the lowest number of cases at one each.

SAN FERNANDO CITY, Pampanga ? The Department of Health (DoH) here reported that dengue cases in Central Luzon from January to May, this year increased by a whopping 461% as compared with number in the first semester last year.

DoH said in a report that it recorded over 3,877 dengue cases since last January in the region.

?Ninety-one percent of these patients were admitted in the different disease reporting units in the region,? it said.

Records showed that dengue cases were particularly high in Pulung Cacutud and Lourdes Northwest in Angeles City; San Vicente in Apalit; Dau in Mabalacat; Sapang Maisac in Mexico; Lourdes in Minalin; and Calulut in this city.

DoH Regional Director Rio Magpantay said that the region is experiencing a dramatic peak in the number of cases this year.

?We are extensively monitoring it to avert a possible outbreak,? Magpantay said.

The Regional Epidemiology and Surveillance unit said that from January to April this year, at least 3,688 dengue cases were reported.

Kalinga enhances dengue alert

TABUK CITY, Kalinga, June 13 (PIA) - - Government entities working on the prevention of dengue are called to unify efforts in order to suppress in one action dengue in the province.


Governor Jocel Baac issued a memorandum order directing line agencies and others concerned to gather for the observance of dengue awareness month and ASEAN Dengue Day.


At the onset of the rainy season when dengue disease is prevalent in the province, Baac ordered heads of agencies to attend a half day symposium on the observance of dengue awareness month on June 15 to be held at the Davidson Hotel here.


After the symposium, stakeholders with the full support of the provincial government, will plan how to prevent the spread of dengue in the province.


Earlier during the conduct of the Brigada Eskwela, the parents-teachers association and the community people included the clearing of breeding places of mosquitoes.


For sustained participation in the campaign, schools are also tapped to take the lead role in the dengue awareness campaign. Topics about the disease and how to prevent it will be discussed inside classrooms making pupils on the long run as information multipliers to spread the news to their family members and neighbors.


According to city information officer Oliver Gacuya, some barangays in Tabuk have revived the dengue brigade where everyone goes out in one day to clean and clear surroundings of the community and assigned areas per group to monitor would-be mosquito breeding places.


Kalinga reported 132 cases of dengue from January to April this year with Tabuk registering 92 cases and Bulanao in particular 42. In the Cordillera region, 348 cases were reported for the same period compared to 344 last year. National data shows a total of 13,281 dengue cases and 82 deaths. *(JDP/PAB- PIA CAR,Kalinga)
