[h=3]Abstract[/h] [h=4]PURPOSE OF REVIEW:[/h] We aim to review the epidemiology of pneumonia with bacterial and viral coinfection, the pathogenesis and clinical impact of coinfection along with the current state of treatment and outcomes.
[h=4]RECENT FINDINGS:[/h] We give particular emphasis to the pathogenesis of bacterial and viral coinfection including specific highlighting on influenza, rhinovirus, respiratory syncytial virus and cytomegalovirus. Updates on the current state of diagnosis and management are included. We conclude with the discussion of outcomes of coinfections and areas where future research can be directed to improve our underlying knowledge in clinical practice regarding viral and bacterial coinfection.
[h=4]SUMMARY:[/h] Viral and bacterial coinfections are common in both community-acquired and hospital-acquired pneumonias. Clinicians must be aware of these entities for appropriate management and prognostication of individual patients, as well as for the prevention of nosocomial spread of viral illness.
