Poultry breeders' dramas from the Nowomiejski poviat. More large herds to kill [MAP OF OCNISK CHOROBY]
February 15, 2023, 14:43

Three more large outbreaks of H5N1 have been detected in poultry farms here in the last 7 days alone. From the beginning of February, there were 4 of them in the Nowomiejski district, while 52 in the whole of Poland.

These farms are quite close to each other. The virus of highly pathogenic avian influenza (mortality is up to 100%) first attacked a duck farm in Gwiździny (Nowe Miasto Lubawskie commune). 18,823 poultry were kept here; the virus was confirmed on February 4.

On February 9, another outbreak was detected - this time in a kennel in Mroczenko (Grodziczno commune). 16,140 ducks were kept here.

In the following days, due to the H5N1 virus, more herds had to be liquidated. On February 11, in Tereszewo (Kurzętnik commune), avian influenza was confirmed in a farm with 15,842 turkeys for slaughter. On February 13, bird flu was detected in Krzemieniewo (also in the Kurzętnik commune). The local flock consisted of 4,765 turkeys.

As you can see, the bird flu virus spreads very easily. That is why biosecurity is so important, which was reminded on Radio Olsztyn by the Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship Veterinary Officer Jerzy Koronowski...

The Chief Veterinary Officer informed about submitting a declaration to the World Organization for Animal Health that Poland regained the status of a country free from highly pathogenic avian influenza.

Declaration on regaining by Poland the status of a country free from avian influenza
The Chief Veterinary Officer informed last week that he had submitted a declaration to the World Organization for Animal Health (WOAH) that Poland would regain the status of a country free from highly pathogenic avian influenza on June 25, 2023.

According to Art. 10.4.6 of the Terrestrial Animal Health Code, if HPAI infection in poultry occurred in a country previously free of avian influenza, recovery of free status may take place 28 days after the stamping-out policy is applied (including killing the birds and carrying out cleaning and disinfection).

"The end of activities related to the eradication of the disease in the last outbreak of highly pathogenic avian influenza in poultry took place on May 26, 2023. Therefore, the period of 28 days from the date of final disinfection expired on June 25, 2023, which allowed for the submission of declarations to WOAH" - pointed out GLW.

End of restrictions on poultry trade?
The chief veterinarian informed about the submission of the declaration to the authorities of all countries that introduced restrictions on trade in poultry, poultry meat and poultry meat products due to the occurrence of avian influenza in Poland.

EPIDEMIOLOGICAL COMMENTS
In the fattening turkey establishment, 6361 turkeys for slaughter were kept in 3 aviaries. On 15 December the owner informed about the mass mortality of turkeys – after the night approximately 2300 turkeys were found dead, the rest with clinical symptoms such as diarrhea, weakness, and neurological symptoms. On the same day, official veterinarians visited the farm, and samples of the dead turkeys were collected from all aviaries for passive surveillance for avian influenza and sent to the National Food and Veterinary Risk Assessment Institute (National Reference Laboratory) for avian influenza testing. Temporary restrictions on the farm were imposed immediately until the laboratory results were available. Highly pathogenic avian influenza was confirmed in all samples and the subtype H5N1 was detected.
