West Nile virus in Faro
The General Directorate of Health yesterday revealed the existence of "a probable case of West Nile virus," identified a Portuguese citizen living in the Algarve and that when the CM was found, was admitted to the Hospital of Faro. The infection has occurred in the country, since the CM questioned whether there is a possibility that the virus has been contracted abroad, Francisco George, Director General of Health, said that "in principle, no."
Health authorities yesterday gathered experts to "assess the risks pertaining to this case", whose confirmation is dependent on an analysis. "It will take a few days," explained Francis George, advancing the tests already completed point to this diagnosis. The case will be reported to international authorities. The patient has been discharged from the Hospital of Faro, for having expressed "a positive development" but the case is still being monitored. The West Nile virus is transmitted by mosquito bite also the animals "and rarely progresses to viral meningitis."
