KUALA LUMPUR: About 4,990 prisoners and staff at the Kluang Prison complex were told to be on high alert for symptoms of influenza A (H1N1) after they came in contact with five prisoners showing symptoms of the disease.
One of the five had been admitted to hospital while the rest were treated as outpatients.
Director-General of Health Tan Sri Dr Ismail Merican said the four sick prisoners were being confined to one cell in the prison.
"Throat swabs were taken from all the five prisoners and we have yet to know whether they are H1N1 victims," he added.
The prisoners were among 43 in seven clusters, who were taken to hospitals in Johor, Kelantan and Terengganu for suspected Influenza A (H1N1).
The others were:
- 26 pupils of Batu Rakit Integrated Boarding school in Kuala Terengganu. All have been placed under quarantine at the hostel.
- three pupils of SJK (T) Taman Ungku Tun Aminah, Johor Baru, who have been confirmed positive for H1N1.
- three National Service trainees under quarantine at the PLKN Bukit Jong, Kuala Krai, Kelantan. They were suspected to be infected while 471 others in the camp were under observation.
- four pupils of Asrama SMU (A), Tarbiah Diniah To'Uban in Pasir Mas, Kelantan. They were quarantined at the hostel for suspected H1N1.
- a kindergarten pupil of Tadika Kemas Al-Alif in Parit Khalid, Parit Raja, Johor. The pupil had been admitted to hospital while another treated for H1N1 symptoms. Twenty-two others in the kindergarten were being observed.
- five people at the Tinggi Batu Pahat Skills Institute in Johor. They were treated as outpatients for suspected H1N1 symptoms.
Twenty-four new H1N1 cases were reported yesterday.
