Among matched Omicron cases with an onset date between November 22 and December 17, 2021, there were 21/6,312 (0.33%) hospitalization or deaths and 0/6,312 (0.0%) deaths, compared to 116/8,875 (2.24%) hospitalizations or deaths among Delta cases and 7/8,875 (0.3%) deaths.
For Omicron cases compared to Delta cases, the risk of hospitalization or death was 54% lower (Hazard Ratio
=0.46, 95% CI: 0.27-0.77) after adjusting for vaccination status and region.
Stratified estimates by age (<60 and ≥60 years of age) also showed a lower risk of hospitalization or death when compared to Delta cases (HR<60=0.30, 95% CI: 0.16-0.57, HR ≥60=0.55, 95% CI: 0.28-1.06).
Due to the transmissibility of Omicron, the absolute number of hospitalizations and impact on the healthcare system is likely to be significant, despite possible reduced severity.
Results
We identified 6,314 Omicron cases that met eligibility criteria, of which 6,312 could be matched with at least one Delta case based on age, gender, and onset date. Demographic characteristics can be found in Table 1. The percentage of hospitalizations and deaths was higher among Delta cases compared to Omicron (Figure 1).
The risk of hospitalization or death was 68% lower (HR=0.32, 95% CI: 0.20-0.51) in Omicron cases compared to Delta cases.
After further adjustment for vaccination status, the risk of hospitalization or death was 54% lower in Omicron cases (HR=0.46, 95% CI: 0.27-0.77). Stratified estimates by age were similar (HR<60=0.30, 95% CI: 0.16-0.57, HR ≥60=0.55, 95% CI: 0.28-1.06)
