Pune A 13-year-old girl from Guru Nanak School died on Tuesday morning at Sassoon Hospital due to suspected swine flu virus. But the picture will become clear only on getting the report of the girl?s throat swabs that have been sent to the National Institute of Virology (NIV) for confirmation of swine flu virus.
Meanwhile, District Collector Chandrakant Dalve said B K Birla School where 16 students tested positive shut down today as parents took their children home from the residential school. He said nine people tested positive for the H1N1 virus on Monday.
The 13-year-old girl died due to suspected H1N1 virus related Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome. She died within an hour of admission at the hospital, Dalvi said. He added that the pandemic has ensured that health officers will not be enrolled for election duty.
There are 10 patients in the Intensive Care Units out of which five are on ventilator and two are critical. Out of 102 patients admitted to various hospitals, 23 are positive with H1N1 virus, Dalvi said. Meanwhile, 3.40 lakh people have been screened out of which 15,085 are suspected to carry swine flu symptoms and are being treated.
The three other schoolchildren who have tested positive are from Vidya Mandir, Tanajiwadi, New Poona English School and Abhinav School. Dr R R Pardeshi, chief medical officer of PMC and R Jadhav, administrative officer of the PMC school board said precautionary measures like contact tracing and visiting the schools to screen the students are being taken. Dalvi also urged the residential school authorities around Pune to check on students with suspected swine flu symptoms.
