Swine flu may be on the way out

PUNE: Swine flu could make an 'official' exit soon. With the drastic dip in H1N1 cases in the last few months, the district administration is mulling to propose the state government to withdraw the Epidemic Diseases Act, which was invoked in Pune on August 3, 2009 -- a day after the death of 14-year-old schoolgirl Reida Shaikh, the first casualty of the virus in the country. The act has been in force in the last 16 months to prevent the spread of the virus.
"The threat of the H1N1 virus is almost subsided. Barring one or two cases here and there due to seasonal variations, the swine flu virus has stabilised like any seasonal influenza virus. The National Institute of Virology (NIV) has also confirmed the same. A detailed report about the present status of the virus will be sent to the government to substantiate the stand that the Act is no longer needed and hence should be withdrawn," district collector Chandrakant Dalvi said.
Under the Act, to avoid spread of the disease district collectors empowered to declare holidays in schools, cordon off areas, implement travel restrictions and quarantine suspected persons as well as people who had come directly in contact with suspected patients.
