MONTREAL -- After reporting nearly 100 new COVID-19 deaths 24 hours ago, the province reported a much lower number on Sunday with 21 deaths due to the disease added.

Since the pandemic began, Quebec says 12,310 people have died as a result of COVID-19.

Hospitalizations for novel coronavirus treatment increased by 105 with 419 patients checking in for treatment and 314 being discharged. There are now 3,300 people in hospital with infections and 282 of those are in intensive care ward, an increase of seven from 24 hours ago.

Of the new patients, 289 were double-vaccinated when they checked in, 122 were unvaccinated, seven received one dose of vaccine and one person was under five years old...

Quebec is reporting 89 new COVID-19 deaths on Tuesday along with a net increase of 36 new hospitalizations.

The total number of people who have died due to the novel coronavirus in Quebec is now 12,453.

There are now 3,417 people in hospital with COVID-19 after 336 people were admitted in the last 24 hours and 300 people were discharged...

... ICU cases rose slightly with three more people in intensive care, for a total of 289.

Non-vaccinated people continue to be overrepresented in the ICU numbers. They only make up about 10 per cent of the population in Quebec, but they accounted for about 42 per cent of the people over four years old who ended up in the ICU in the past 28 days, according to provincial data.

The ministry of health says unvaccinated people are 5.8 times more likely to be hospitalized and 12.4 times more likely to be sent to the ICU.

On Tuesday, the province reported 5,143 new COVID-19 cases. However, that number is an underestimation since PCR testing in Quebec is reserved for priority clients, such as health-care workers, first responders, people who are homeless, among others. For two weeks in Quebec, daily deaths linked to COVID have increased sharply, and the portrait of patients in hospitals is no longer the same in this fifth wave.

“Compared to the first wave, where all the patients were intubated, or in a coma, it is no longer the majority of patients in intensive care at present”, explains Dr. François Marquis, head of intensive care at Maisonneuve-Rosemont Hospital in interview with Mario Dumont.

Dr. Marquis notes that vaccinated people in intensive care currently represent 50% of cases, and 40% on the floors.

If the percentage of vaccinated people who end up in intensive care seems rather high, Dr. Marquis specifies that they also suffer from serious illnesses.

"What most of my colleagues share as an impression is that our double vaccinees in intensive care often have diseases of the immune system, drugs that modify their immune system, chronic diseases, cancers, hematological problems", they add.

He also notices that the double vaccinated are doing a little better than those who have not been.

In addition, he notes that patients with COVID, in addition to having the coronavirus, have another condition.

"We see more and more, and sometimes it's the 'other thing' that leads to death. When filling out the death certificate, I happened to say that the patient died of an infection […] with COVID, and not the opposite”, he specifies.

With the improvement of treatments, vaccination, Dr. Marquis observes that patients in intensive care manage more than before to get through the disease, which brings a little hope.

Quebec saw a net increase of only eight hospitalizations Wednesday, and a slight decrease in ICU cases, reflecting provincial public health authorities' observations a day earlier that the pace of COVID-19 hospitalizations is slowing.

Deaths in the province, however, remain very high, with 88 newly reported, just one less than Tuesday's count.

Hospital turnover also remains quite high, with 359 new admittances -- there were also many discharges, however, leading to the small net increase.

There are four fewer people overall in intensive care, with 42 newly admitted and 46 newly discharged.

Overall, those hospital numbers continue to strain Quebec to its maximum capacity, with 3,425 people currently in hospital for the virus and 285 in intensive care.

On Tuesday, health authorities also released a guide for hospitals on how to decrease the overall level of care in coming days if they do max out their capacity. This would mean providing many non-COVID-19 patients with less intensive care for the time being until the situation stabilizes.

There are 6,123 new COVID-19 cases registered as of Wednesday, but testing numbers remain unreliable since PCR testing has been limited to a small segment of Quebecers such as health-care workers and teachers.

Of those tests, the positivity rate currently stands at 13.2 per cent...

An additional 98 Quebecers have died due to COVID-19, a total of 12,639 since the start of the pandemic.

However, officials note there are 14 fewer Quebecers in hospital to be treated for the virus, with 3,411 people currently occupying beds.

Intensive care admissions remain stable, with 285 people receiving care.

Of the new hospitalizations, 18 are under the age of four (an age group not eligible for vaccination), 93 are unvaccinated or received their first dose less than 14 days ago, 11 have one dose of vaccine, 151 received their second dose of vaccine more than seven days ago and 79 received their third dose more than seven days ago.

Quebec Health Minister Christian Dubé points out vaccination does not completely prevent infection, but it does decrease the risk of dire consequences.

The province's seven-day average is now 6,175...

MONTREAL -- COVID-19 hospitalizations in Quebec dropped by 60 on Friday, and ICU numbers decreased by 20.

Premier Francois Legault spoke about the levelling off of hospitalizations on Thursday, but said the hospital system is still very fragile, and it's too soon to ease public health rules.

"Finally we're seeing a decrease in the overall number of hospitalizations," he said. "Still, we're at the worst point so far in the pandemic."

The total number of hospitalizations is now 3,351 with 346 patients checking in for care and 406 being discharged. Of the new patients, 19 were under five years old when checking in and ineligible for a vaccine dose, 77 were unvaccinated or received a dose of vaccine less than two weeks prior, 133 received two doses of vaccine, 104 received three doses and 13 received one dose more than two weeks prior.

Nineteen patients were transferred to or admitted into ICU wards, which now are caring for a total of 265 patients. Of the new ICU patients, six were unvaccinated, nine were double-vaccinated and four received a third booster shot before being admitted.

The health ministry says unvaccinated people are 5.7 times more likely to require hospitalizations and 12.2 times more likely to wind up in an ICU.

This is based on 4,383,646 Quebecers being double-vaccinated, 2,140,959 have received a third booster dose, and 1,073,357 are unvaccinated.

MONTREAL -- Quebec reported a third straight day of decreases in COVID-19 hospitalizations with 56 fewer patients from 24 hours ago.

The Ministry of Health said 216 patients checked into hospitals in the province for treatment and 272 were discharged, bringing the total number of hospitalizations to 3,295, including 275 people in intensive care wards, an increase of 10.

Of the new patients, 88 received two doses of vaccine more than seven days prior to check in, 76 received their third dose, 48 were unvaccinated or received one dose less than two weeks prior, and four received a single dose of vaccine more than two weeks prior.

Of the 12 patients either transferred or admitted to the ICU in the past 24 hours, 10 were unvaccinated, one was double-vaccinated and one was under five years old and ineligible to receive a vaccine dose.

MONTREAL -- Quebec COVID-19 hospitalizations continue to drop with the Ministry of Health reporting that there are 12 fewer patients receiving treatment, and two fewer in intensive care wards.

The Ministry of Health said 285 patients checked into a hospital for treatment and 297 were discharged for a total of 3,283 hospitalizations, including 273 people in intensive care wards.

Of the new patients, 91 were under 60 years old with 41 of those unvaccinated, 30 double-vaccinated, five triple-vaccinated, and five having received one dose of COVID-19 vaccine. Of the 194 patients over 60 years old, 43 were unvaccinated, 69 double-vaccinated, 77 triple-vaccinated and five having received one dose of vaccine. Ten patients were under five years old and ineligible to receive a vaccine dose.

Of the 20 patients transferred or admitted to ICU wards, 12 were under 60 years old with seven unvaccinated, four double-vaccinated and one having received one dose. For those eight ICU patients over 60, three were unvaccinated, three triple-vaccinated, and two double-vaccinated.

The province also recorded 33 more deaths due to the novel coronavirus and added 5,141 new infections from 34,971 samples, creating a positivity rate of 10.5 per cent.

The ministry is monitoring 1,623 active COVID-19 outbreaks...

Quebec is reporting 85 new deaths related to COVID-19 on Tuesday as hospitalizations dropped again, with 21 fewer patients receiving care than 24 hours ago.

The total number of deaths in Quebec is now 12,936.

Hospitalizations reached a total of 3,278 after 272 people were admitted and 293 people were discharged since Monday.

Meanwhile, the number of people in intensive care remained the same on Tuesday with 263 patients in the ICU.

Quebec Premier François Legault is holding a news conference Tuesday at 2 p.m. where he will reportedly announce some public health measures will be lifted, such as the reopening of indoor dining in restaurants.

The province says unvaccinated people are 5.7 times more likely to be hospitalized with COVID-19 and 11.6 times more likely to be sent to the ICU than vaccinated people based on the last four weeks of data.

Active cases in the province also dropped by 1,647 in the past day, for a total 45,436 cases.

The latest update from Quebec shows there were 2,977 new COVID-19 cases reported on Tuesday, however, that number is not a true reflection of the daily cases since PCR testing is not open to the general public in Quebec. Results from rapid antigen tests are also not included in provincial data...
