Authorities play down TB figures

BRISBANE: Queenslanders should not fear a tuberculosis outbreak, Australia?s foremost expert says, despite a spike in the number of reported cases in recent years.
In 2008, 140 cases of the contagious bacterial disease, which especially affects the lungs, causing fever-like symptoms and destruction of tissue, were reported to Queensland Health authorities, but according to their records, numbers jumped to 227 in 2009.
Seventy-two cases have been reported already this year.
Director of Queensland?s Tuberculosis (or TB) Control Centre, Dr Tom Konstantinos, said while his figures were more conservative, he admitted proven cases had risen.
?It?s gone up over the last few years and changed with the patterns of the migrations of people,? Dr Konstantinos said...
