Visitor from Italy brings rare case of measles to R.I.

PROVIDENCE ? A case of measles, a highly contagious disease that is considered eradicated in the United States, cropped up in Rhode Island on Wednesday, according to the state Department of Health.

The patient is a woman in her 20s from Italy who arrived in New York from that country on Tuesday, said Annemarie Beardsworth, public information officer for the department. After she traveled by car to Rhode Island, she sought medical assistance, and ?an astute physician? ? who has not been identified ? informed the Department of Health that a potential case of measles was at hand. A blood test confirmed the diagnosis...
