At least 13 pregnant women have died and four are in serious condition and had to be put on ventilators, after being allegedly administered with contaminated IV fluid.

The incident occurred in the government run Umaid hospital in the city over the last 10 days.

"It is suspected that intravenous (IV) fluid was the reason for the deaths and when the fluid was tested at a laboratory at a local level, bacterial infection was found in it. A case has been registered by the Superintendent of Umaid Hospital and an enquiry has been ordered," said Jodhpur police commissioner Bhupinder Kumar.

He also said that several teams had been formed to seize the infected IV fluid from the hospitals across the city.

one Commented Jodhpur: It took 10 days and the death of 12 full-term pregnant women in Jodhpur in Rajasthan before state health authorities woke up to suspect that all might have died after being administered ?infected? intravenous ?dextrose and ringer lactose? fluids. Five pregnant women are in a ?serious condition,? doctors said.
Two foetuses have died in utero (before being born) while the other 10 survived ? and these infants are said to be out of danger.
Following confirmation of lab reports in the Women and Child Wing of the state government Umaid Hospital ? the largest in the city ? that several batches of IV fluids manufactured by the same company were tainted, health officials have recalled all batches of these fluids, lodged an FIR against the manufacturer and issued a statewide alert against its use.
A three-member panel of doctors has been constituted to probe the deaths.

Government announces Rs.5 lakh ex gratia each to kin of deceased

The Rajasthan government on Sunday suspended a drug inspector and an employee of the government Umaid Hospital in Jodhpur, where 13 women have died of excessive bleeding during childbirth in the past two weeks.

It announced an ex gratia of Rs.5 lakh each to the next of kin of the deceased, besides blacklisting two pharmaceutical and surgical equipment firms.

The decisions were taken at a high-level meeting convened at Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot's residence here on Saturday. Mr. Gehlot also announced an inquiry into the deaths by the Jodhpur Divisional Commissioner Ramesh Kumar Jain, who has been asked to submit his report within the next 15 days.

Mr. Gehlot flew into Jodhpur on Sunday afternoon to meet the four pregnant women at Umaid Hospital, where their condition was stated to be critical.

Jodhpur IV deaths: Supplier firm's top official held

JODHPUR: The police on Sunday arrested a senior official of Parental Surgical India Pvt Ltd (Indore), the firm that had allegedly supplied contaminated intravenous fluid to Jodhpur hospitals where 13 women have died in the last two weeks.

"Sanjay Shah, manager (production & quality control) was arrested in Indore with the help of the Madhya Pradesh police. He is being taken to Jodhpur," said Jodhpur police commissioner Bhupendra Kumar Dak. The contaminated IV fluid is suspected to have caused the death of 13 women at Umaid Hospital and MG Hospital in Jodhpur over the past 14 days. Four other women are stated to be in a critical condition.

One more woman dies in Jodhpur hospital

Jodhpur, Mar 13 (PTI) A woman died in a state-run hospital here today with the family alleging administration of contaminated intravenous fluid was responsible for her death, a charge denied by the hospital administration.

The family members alleged 30-year-old Prem Kanwar, admitted to the Mahatma Gandhi Hospital on January 31, had died due to administration of the contaminated intravenous fluid.

Denying the charge, Hospital Medical Superintendent Arvind Mathur said the woman died of multiple-organ failure.

Jodhpur maternity deaths: Probe submits report

Jodhpur, May 30 (PTI) The administrative probe into serial deaths of 16 women post delivery after being administered contaminated fluids has submitted its report and put forth suggestions to prevent a recurrence of such incidents.

The report submitted to Principal Secretary (Medical Edu) Mukesh Sharma comprises 133 pages and 2,238 annexures.

Though, the report attributes contaminated I V fluids as the major cause of deaths in Umaid Hospital, it has also looked into other causes like inadequate staff and scanty resources.
