NEW YORK: Former BJP chief Rajnath Singh has contracted dengue fever and has been advised to stay here until it was safe for him to travel, his spokesperson said on Friday.

"He (Singh) is stable but the doctors will not let him leave until the trend is downwards," Singh's spokesperson Sudhanshu Trivedi told PTI.

Singh, who has been in New York for almost a week, went for further tests to the hospital yesterday but then later returned to his hotel near the United Nations, he said.

The 59-year-old leader was yesterday supposed to leave New York for returning to India.

Singh had spoke at the UN about India's concern on terrorism on Wednesday. He had later in an interview to PTI said countries like Pakistan that have terrorists operating in their territory should be declared as "rogue states".

While foreigners coming to India, especially now at the time of the Commonwealth Games, invariably talk of the mosquito menace, the BJP has a question to ask. How come former BJP president Rajnath Singh got dengue while in New York where he had gone to address the UN General Assembly? While the delegation has returned home, Singh has stayed behind to recover. Some will argue that he got bitten while in India, but the BJP?s having none of this.

Obviously, dengue is NOT endemic in New York. It is conceivable that this individual contracted dengue in India before flying to New York.

I am surprised I don't see anything on this story from the New York side; perhaps this is an errant report for political purposes.
