Cuba cholera cases now stand at 170 confirmed and eight more suspected

The total number of confirmed cholera cases in Cuba now stands at 170 while eight more cases are suspected.

The numbers on Cuba?s cholera outbreak continued to grow over the weekend, with officials reporting 12 new confirmed cases, bringing the total to 170, and eight new suspected cases in the southeastern province of Granma.

Cuba?s Public Health Ministry, in a statement published in the official news media on Saturday morning, declared that the outbreak was ?decreasing? with 158 confirmed cases and three deaths confirmed.

But the numbers provided by lead Granma province epidemiologist Ana Maria Batista during her appearance Friday, Saturday and Sunday evenings on provincial television showed increases in all the categories.

Cholera cancels Cuban carnivals

HAVANA, Cuba, Friday July 20, 2012 ? Cuban authorities have suspended the traditional summer carnivals in the eastern cities of Bayamo and Manzanillo due to the outbreak of cholera in the region.

The annual celebrations, which were scheduled for August, were canceled "to avoid the spread of illnesses," according to a Communist Party official in Granma province.

While the cholera situation is said to be under control, authorities were concerned about possible contagion of the "floating population" attracted by the carnivals, a source in the Bayamo municipal government said.

The outbreak came to light last month in Manzanillo, a city of more than 130,000 people that has accounted for the majority of the 158 cases of cholera reported by Cuba's Public Health Ministry...

Cuban government stays mum on new cholera reports

Four weeks after the Cuban government announced that an outbreak of cholera in the eastern part of the island was over, there are unconfirmed reports of new cases popping up in two small towns.

Twenty-seven cases were reported in the municipality of San Luis, in the eastern province of Santiago de Cuba, and 19 more in the Bahia Honda municipality 35 miles west of Havana.

Roberto Gonz?lez, a dissident living in San Luis, said that area public health workers and residents have told him of the more than two dozen confirmed cases and 102 suspected cases of cholera in the municipality over the past two weeks...

Imprisoned Cuban journalist nears 25th day of hunger strike

The International Press Institute (IPI) is deeply concerned for the well-being of jailed Cuban journalist Calixto Ram?n Mart?nez, who has been on a hunger strike since Nov. 10 to protest prison conditions.

In a video statement released yesterday, Hablemos Press, the Havana-based independent news agency for which Mart?nez was a correspondent, said that the journalist was being held in Combinado del Este prison's ?Area 47?, known as the ?corridor of death? for its previous role in housing death-row inmates.

While information about Mart?nez's condition has been scarce, a Cuban political prisoner, Alexander Roberto Fern?ndez Rico, informed Hablemos Press in November that Mart?nez was being held naked in a ?punishment cell? and being given only a liter of water per day.

Mart?nez was arrested on Sept. 16 and later charged with insulting Fidel and Ram?n Castro under the country's ?contempt of authority? laws, known in the Spanish-speaking world as desacato. The journalist's arrest is thought to be releated to investigative coverage an outbreak of cholera and dengue fever on the island, though the Cuban government has provided no official explanation.

Doctors are now making door-to-door enquiries in Havana and anyone displaying possible cholera symptoms is being tested. Suspected cases are being sent to the Tropical Medicine Institute, the IPK.

"All our wards are dealing with this issue - they are almost full," an IPK employee told the BBC by telephone, before saying she was not authorised to comment further.

Pharmacies across the city are now selling water purification drops, rationed to two small bottles per person.

But in the tourist heart of Old Havana, cafes and restaurants remain open and the streets are still full of mobile food and drink vendors.

Most say they have heard rumours of a cholera outbreak in Cerro and are taking extra precautions, but none have received any official instructions.

The WHO stresses "public communication" as a key tool in controlling any cholera outbreak.

"The transmission was generated by a food dispenser, asymptomatic carrier of the disease, acquired during outbreaks previously reported in other regions of the country," the release added.

The note explains that since 6 January, "detected an increase in diarrheal diseases in Cerro municipality and later in other municipalities in the capital." "As a result of the measures taken, the transmission is in the process of extinction," said the ministry.

Health authorities recommend people "step up hygiene measures," such as washing hands, ingestion of chlorinated water, cleaning and cooking of food.

In late August, Cuba ended a cholera outbreak that has killed three people and infestation of about 400 people, mostly in the eastern province of Granma, about 750 kilometers east of the capital. However, there was a resurgence in October, which was not recognized by the government of Raul Castro.

Cholera outbreak in Cuba not keeping Canadian travellers at home

TORONTO - Authorities in Cuba are acknowledging a spate of new cholera cases in the capital, but the outbreak doesn't seem to be keeping Canadians away.

Travel agents say January is always a popular time for bookings to Cuba and they say business hasn't tailed off in the least.

Some agents say word of 51 new cholera cases in the Havana area has only sparked a handful inquiries from people who have no plans to cancel their trips.

The Public Health Agency of Canada has issued a low-key advisory about the outbreak, but says most travellers are at low risk of contracting the intestinal illness.
