A friend found his body in the apartment and phoned police. Hoffman was alone in his bathroom when he was discovered with a heroin-filled needle in his arm, law enforcement sources said.

One police source told FoxNews.com that authorities are investigating whether Hoffman received a more potent type of heroin that's being blamed for numerous deaths over the past two weeks, first in the Pittsburgh area and later along the east coast. The substance combines heroin and fentanyl, an opiate used to soothe the pain of cancer patients, and is being blamed for dozens of deaths across the country,
the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.

Police are "looking at if (Hoffman) had the bad batch going around," the source told FoxNews.com...

Louisiana House approves heroin bills to double penalties, expand access to overdose antidote

House Bill 332, sponsored by state Rep. Joe Lopinto, R-Metairie, increases the mandatory minimum penalty for heroin producers and distributors from five to 10 years and sets a mandatory minimum of two years for possession. It passed the full House and will now be sent to the Senate.
...
Moreno's bill expands access to Naloxone, also called by its brand name Narcan, which is a prescription drug commonly administered by emergency room doctors to reverse the effects of opiate overdoses. Providing first responders with the drug would give overdose victims a better chance of survival, since minutes are critical in the midst of a potentially fatal overdose.

East Baton Rouge Parish Coroner Dr. William "Beau" Clark testified in favor of the bill, saying the increase in heroin deaths from 2012 to 2013 in East Baton Rouge Parish was seven-fold, from 5 to 35. So far in 2014, he's confirmed seven opiate overdoses with two more pending, putting the year on par with last.

"In southeast Louisiana, at least 144 people died of heroin overdoses (in 2013)," Moreno said.

Rep. Bernard LeBas, D-Ville Platte, said he spoke with his son, an emergency room doctor, who said he has injected the drug into overdosing patients "thousands" of times. He supported expanded access but had questions about implementation.

"It saves lives. I just want to make sure (first responders) get the proper training," LeBas said.

Ripples were sent through the Worcester community after learning that nine, potentially 10 citizens had died of suspected heroin overdoses in the first week of August.

While the city of Worcester has declared a public health advisory and is doing everything that they can to help prevent heroin overdoses from happening in the city, public health officials say that these overdoses are still happening at an alarming rate.

?Over the course of the weekend ? from noon on Friday to Sunday evening ? we had an additional 10 overdoses,? said Derek Brindisi, the Worcester City Director of Public Health. ?We don?t yet know what percentage of them resulted in deaths. This follows the nine, potentially ten deaths in the first week of August. We are currently working with all of our stakeholders to try to get to the bottom of this.?...

Overdose deaths linked to 'superdrug' heroin and fentanyl mix
Coroner investigating a spate of possible overdose deaths

A supply of “bad heroin” that has reportedly killed three people in the last week in Hamilton is likely linked to a hyper-potent version of the drug mixed with fentanyl, a former opioid user says.

Coroner’s office officials say they can't confirm the fentanyl connection yet, but lacing or mixing heroin with the powerful prescription painkiller to create a kind of “super high” is also popping up in other parts of the country – often with terrible results...

Hamilton police and the city are taking unprecedented steps to protect drug users from a more powerful and lethal batch of heroin in Hamilton – even providing an amnesty on criminal charges to anyone who turns over drugs to the police.

It's all part of a move towards harm reduction strategies that stress safety over criminalization, officials say. That includes delivering new overdose prevention kits right to users' doors, not laying criminal charges and even picking up illicit drugs from the people who use them in an attempt to figure out just what is killing people...

Heroin death toll skyrockets in New York City
Posted: Monday, September 1, 2014 11:46 am
By Mark Berman Washington Post News Service

The number of people who died from unintentional heroin overdoses in New York City last year was the highest in a decade, according to data released last week by the city's Department of Health and Mental Hygiene.

In New York, where the overall rate of drug overdose deaths has dramatically risen since 2010, a national problem is playing out on the city's streets. The number of overdoses involving heroin has significantly increased since 2010 and accounted for more than half of the city's overdoses last year. And more than three-quarters of the overdoses involved an opioid...

Emerging street drug fifteen times stronger than heroin
Thursday 21 August 2014 - 12am PST

Emergency physicians should expect "an upswing in what on the surface appear to be heroin overdoses," but are actually overdoses tied to acetyl fentanyl, an opiate that is mixed into street drugs marketed as heroin. The looming threat of another unregulated quasi-legal drug is detailed online in Annals of Emergency Medicine ("The Potential Threat of Acetyl Fentanyl: Legal Issues, Contaminated Heroin, and Acetyl Fentanyl 'Disguised' as Other Opiates").

"What's frightening about this emerging street drug is that users themselves may not be aware that they are ingesting it," said lead study author John Stogner, Ph.D. of the Department of Criminal Justice and Criminology at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, N.C. "A patient may report heroin use and have symptoms consistent with heroin overdose, but an emergency physician may find that the standard dose of antidote (naloxone) doesn't work. Larger or additional doses are necessary when acetyl fentanyl is responsible. It's never good to lose time between overdose and treatment." ...

Fentanyl deaths linked to heroin soar in Kent County (Michigan)
John Hogan, WZZM 6:20 p.m. EDT April 6, 2015

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WZZM) - A highly-addictive painkiller called fentanyl is now being used in conjunction with heroin, helping push overdose deaths in Kent County to a new high.

About 38 percent of the 67 confirmed overdose deaths in Kent County last year are due to heroin or fentanyl, according to numbers from the Kent County Medical Examiner's Office.

"We've seen a great increase in the amount of fentanyl cases in the last year,'' Kent County Medical Examiner Dr. Stephen Cohle said. "It's really spiked upward. It's cheaper and more readily available than heroin.''...
