Cases of tick-borne Rocky Mountain spotted fever are up 533 percent this spring compared to the same period last year, the Tennessee Department of Health said today.

The state agency is advising people to take extra precautions when outdoors. A mild winter and a warmer than normal March brought out ticks earlier this year.

?We?ve documented 38 cases of Rocky Mount spotted fever, compared with only six by the same time last year,? said Abelardo Moncayo, with the agency?s division of communicable and enviromental diseases.

Health Officials say Rocky Mountain spotted fever is the most common tick-borne illness in Tennessee.

Officials say 74 cases have been confirmed across Tennessee so far this year; which is a major increase from last year's numbers.

Doctors say the disease is most commonly carried in the brown dog tick. They say a bite from this tick can be fatal.

PUTNAM COUNTY -- The latest numbers are in and, so far, 18 cases of Rocky Mountain spotted fever have been reported in the Upper Cumberland Region -- more than 100 cases statewide this year alone.

"There's a fair amount of (the disease) here; it's not common but it's certainly not uncommon," Dr. Mark Pierce, an infectious disease specialist at Cookeville Regional Medical Center, said. "Eastern Tennessee is probably worse than Western Tennessee."

Tick-borne illnesses are on the rise because of hot and humid temperatures across the Southeast.

The Tennessee Health Department reports there are 304 cases of Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever, a tick-born illness, across the state this year. There were 255 cases in all during 2011.

Doctors say ticks are a problem for children this year. Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever can be very dangerous if left untreated.
