Russia bans Hungary poultry due to bird flu

Russia has banned poultry imports from Hungary to prevent the spread of the bird flu virus, the Ministry of Agriculture said on Friday.
The ban, effective immediately, applies to live birds hatching eggs, poultry meat and all poultry products not subject to thermal treatment, poultry feed and equipment used in keeping and slaughtering birds.
Russia introduced the same ban on poultry imports on 26 June last year and lifted it partially in October and completely on 1 January 2007 .
The European Commission confirmed on Wednesday that the highly pathogenic H5N1 strain had been found in dead geese in Hungary. This was the first case of bird flu outbreak in the European Union this year.
Croatia was the first to halt Hungarian poultry imports this week, then Serbia and Romania have followed suit.
Hungary's Poultry Product Council said on Friday domestic sales were unlikely to dwindle and supermarket chains have not scaled down their orders, either. The ban by Russia, however, may alter this picture. The ministry has not yet commented on the impact of halted Russian poultry exports.
Hungary has culled 3,300 geese at the farm in Csongr?d County where dead birds were found which later tested positive for the H5N1 strain.
