Pasvik employees found dead birds while monitoring rare species

Employees of Pasvik reported that dead birds were found on the coast of the Barents Sea at the mouth of Voryema during monitoring of rare species listed in the Red Book.
- Previously, bird flu has already been confirmed by specialists of the Committee for Veterinary Medicine of the Murmansk Region in the Teriberka Nature Park, where dead gulls and cormorants were also noted. Later, a weakened kittiwake was encountered on the road near the Pasvik nature reserve,” specialist Elena Valova explained.
Earlier , Nord-News reported that bird flu quarantine was introduced in two territories of the Kola region.

Epizootic foci of infection were observed near Sekretarskoye Lake in Teriberka and in the area of the coast of the Ura Bay of the Barents Sea and the mouth of the Ura River .
Such an outbreak of bird flu was recorded in the Murmansk region for the first time.

The infection can be transmitted to humans, however, according to the latest data, the virus has not been detected among humans .

Russia is fighting bird flu with operation "Loki" - Quarantines from neighboring areas of Finland in Murmansk

In Murmansk, people have been warned about the risk of infection. According to official data, bird flu has not been detected in the regions of Karelia and St. Petersburg.

HS
17:33

IN JULY AND AUGUST, THE RUSSIAN Ministry of Agriculture has demanded measures from poultry production facilities to combat bird flu. The ministry calls its operation Lokki.

According to the Veterinary Inspection Agency, 69 bird flu outbreaks have been registered throughout Russia in 2023.

According to official data, only Murmansk in the north has bird flu among the areas near the Finnish border. The veterinary committee of the Murmansk region has warned residents of the risk of infection and recommended to observe hygiene and buy poultry meat only from authorized outlets.

At the beginning of July, avian influenza was detected in seagulls on the Kola Peninsula near the village of Ura-Guba and at the mouth of the Ura River on the shores of the Barents Sea.

The governor of Murmansk, Andrei Chibis, ordered a quarantine for places within a radius of five kilometers. A round-the-clock checkpoint was brought to the quarantine area to monitor that people and domestic animals do not walk in the area. On July 18, similar measures were introduced in the village of Teriberka, where the entire shore of Lake Sekretarskoje was identified as a disease outbreak.

Olga Dolžanova , the head of the epidemic department of the veterinary committee of the Murmansk region , tells the assistant of Helsingin Sanomat that the disease is only in the village of Teriberka. "By mid-August, more than 1,000 seagull bodies had been collected in the area. They have all been disposed of in crematoriums."

According to Dolžanova, authorities collected 556 dead seagulls in the Ura-Guba region, but no new cases have been reported in August. Here, the quarantine is no longer extended after August.

Veterinary Center of the Republic of KARELIA said in August 3rd, that bird flu has been detected in a park in the center of Petrozavodsk, but the restriction measures were canceled five days later when the laboratory result did not confirm the initial diagnosis.

No other cases of bird flu have been reported in Karelia.

According to the press service of the Leningrad District Veterinary Office, no bird flu cases have been detected in the Leningrad District, which borders Finland and the Gulf of Finland.

The supposed cause is contact with a synanthropic bird as evidenced by a carcass of a corvidae family bird found at 100 meters away from the poultry farm, and laboratory testing of the biomaterial revealed the genome of HPAI virus, subtype H5N1.
