EVALUATION

IT IS NOT KNOWN THAT A TSUNAMI WAS GENERATED. THIS WARNING IS
BASED ONLY ON THE EARTHQUAKE EVALUATION. AN EARTHQUAKE OF THIS
SIZE HAS THE POTENTIAL TO GENERATE A DESTRUCTIVE TSUNAMI THAT CAN
STRIKE COASTLINES NEAR THE EPICENTER WITHIN MINUTES AND MORE
DISTANT COASTLINES WITHIN HOURS. AUTHORITIES SHOULD TAKE
APPROPRIATE ACTION IN RESPONSE TO THIS POSSIBILITY. THIS CENTER
WILL MONITOR SEA LEVEL DATA FROM GAUGES NEAR THE EARTHQUAKE TO
DETERMINE IF A TSUNAMI WAS GENERATED AND ESTIMATE THE SEVERITY OF
THE THREAT.

ESTIMATED INITIAL TSUNAMI WAVE ARRIVAL TIMES AT FORECAST POINTS
WITHIN THE WARNING AND WATCH AREAS ARE GIVEN BELOW. ACTUAL
ARRIVAL TIMES MAY DIFFER AND THE INITIAL WAVE MAY NOT BE THE
LARGEST. A TSUNAMI IS A SERIES OF WAVES AND THE TIME BETWEEN
SUCCESSIVE WAVES CAN BE FIVE MINUTES TO ONE HOUR.

VALUES ARE GIVEN IN BOTH METERS(M) AND FEET(FT).
PER - PERIOD OF TIME IN MINUTES(MIN) FROM ONE WAVE TO THE NEXT.

EVALUATION

SEA LEVEL READINGS INDICATE A TSUNAMI WAS GENERATED. IT MAY HAVE
BEEN DESTRUCTIVE ALONG COASTS NEAR THE EARTHQUAKE EPICENTER AND
COULD ALSO BE A THREAT TO MORE DISTANT COASTS. AUTHORITIES SHOULD
TAKE APPROPRIATE ACTION IN RESPONSE TO THIS POSSIBILITY. THIS
CENTER WILL CONTINUE TO MONITOR SEA LEVEL DATA TO DETERMINE THE
EXTENT AND SEVERITY OF THE THREAT.

FOR ALL AREAS - WHEN NO MAJOR WAVES ARE OBSERVED FOR TWO HOURS
AFTER THE ESTIMATED TIME OF ARRIVAL OR DAMAGING WAVES HAVE NOT
OCCURRED FOR AT LEAST TWO HOURS THEN LOCAL AUTHORITIES CAN ASSUME
THE THREAT IS PASSED. DANGER TO BOATS AND COASTAL STRUCTURES CAN
CONTINUE FOR SEVERAL HOURS DUE TO RAPID CURRENTS. AS LOCAL
CONDITIONS CAN CAUSE A WIDE VARIATION IN TSUNAMI WAVE ACTION THE
ALL CLEAR DETERMINATION MUST BE MADE BY LOCAL AUTHORITIES.

A tsunami measuring 0.9 metres has struck the Solomon Islands after a major earthquake measuring 8.0 magnitude struck off the island, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center in Hawaii has said.

Wednesday's earthquake in the Lata area of the Solomon Islands was measured at a magnitude of 8.0 by the United States Geological Survey.

A tsunami warning was issued for the Solomon Islands, Vanuatu, Nauru, Papua New Guinea, Tuvalu, New Caledonia, Kosrae, Fiji, Kiribati, and Wallis and Futuna islands.

In the French territory of New Caledonia, residents the coast were being advised to evacuate immediately with the tsunami forecast to reach shores around 0300 GMT, according to the French High Commission.

The quake struck at a very shallow depth of only five km and was located 340km east of Kira Kira in the Solomons.

The Australian Bureau of Meteorology said the nation was not at risk from a tsunami.:tiphat:http://www.aljazeera.com/news/asia-pacific/2013/02/20132615459882856.html

CNN) -- An 8.0-magnitude earthquake struck off the Solomon Islands in the South Pacific early Wednesday, the U.S. Geological Survey reported, sparking a tsunami warning.
The center of the quake was located some 360 miles east-southeast of Honiara, the capital of the Solomon Islands, the USGS said. It was reported to be 3.6 miles deep.
A tsunami warning was issued for the Solomon Islands, Vanuatu, Nauru, Papua New Guinea, Tuvalu, New Caledonia, Kosrae, Fiji, Kiribati, and Wallis and Futuna, according to the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center.
A tsunami watch was in effect for more places: the Marshall Islands, Howland and Baker, Pohnpei, Tokelau, Samoa, Kermadec Islands, New Zealand, American Samoa, Tonga, Australia, Niue, Cook Islands, Indonesia, Wake Island, Chuuk, Jarvis Island, Guam, Northern Marianas, Palmyra Island, Yap, Johnston Island, Minamitorishima and Pelau.
Brian Shiro, a geophysicist at the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center, told CNN that instruments near the Solomon Islands indicated that a tsunami was in fact generated. It is 1 meter high, he said, describing it as "significant."
The event seems to be localized to the region, Shiro said, and authorities are still waiting to see if they want to expand the alert.
The quake was followed by several aftershocks in the region, the largest of which had a magnitude of 6.6, the USGS said.

There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries.:tiphat:http://www.cnn.com/2013/02/05/world/asia/solomon-islands-quake/index.html

Tsunami Watch Advisory

reporters@samoanews.com
A tsunami watch is in effect for American Samoa and Samoa after a magnitude 8.0 earthquake occurred near the Santa Cruz Islands at 2:12 local time today. It is not known at this time if a tsunami was generated, this watch is based only on the earthquake evaluation.

The Santa Cruz Islands are located in the western Pacific near the Solomon Islands.

If a tsunami has been generated, the NOAA Tsunami & Earthquake Center estimates it would arrive in American Samoa between 6 and 8 PM.:tiphat:http://www.samoanews.com/?q=node/72408

Re: Santa Cruz Islands - Earthquake magnitude 8.0 - Tsunami warning and watch issued

The quake struck about 11:29 a.m. Guam time, according to the warning center, which estimates that any tsunami waves generated as a result could affect Guam about 4:22 this afternoon. The Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands could be impacted at about 4:26 p.m.

The 8.0-magnitude quake struck about 50 miles west of Lata, in the Solomon Islands, at a depth of about 3.6 miles.

The earthquake has generated a tsunami, and Guam's eastern and southern shores may be vulnerable, said Kanoa Koyanagi, a geophysicist with the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center in Honolulu.

The Solomon Islands are about 2,000 miles from Guam.

Guam and the CNMI at this time are under a tsunami watch, which alerts emergency management officials and the public about an event that may effect the area.

Based on information gathered later, the watch could be upgraded to a tsunami warning or cancelled altogether. A warning alerts residents of possible widespread coastal flooding and powerful currents
