Eight Dead in Solomon Islands After Quake, Agency Says

By Joe Schneider - 2013-02-06T23:24:28Z.

Eight people were killed when a tsunami triggered by a magnitude 8.0 off-shore earthquake hit the Solomon Islands yesterday, according to the aid organization World Vision.

More than 70 aftershocks, including a magnitude 7.0 quake, followed the main temblor...
...
The airport at Lata, the provincial capital, remains closed after being flooded and aid organizations hope to get some flights in later today to bring in supplies, including containers to carry fresh water, Catford said.
...
A wave measuring 91 centimeters (3 feet) in height was recorded at Lata Wharf, near the epicenter...

The sea surge destroyed, or severely damaged, more than 100 homes, according to World Vision...

The surge also washed up deep-sea fish and killed livestock on shore and the area needs to be cleaned up for health reasons, Catford said.

Solomon Islands tsunami deaths confirmed

Bodies found in wake of waves that swept across Santa Cruz Island after undersea earthquake

Staff and agencies in Sydney
guardian.co.uk, Thursday 7 February 2013 02.17 EST
...
At least nine people were killed when an earthquake set off a small but powerful tsunami that sent 1.5-metre (4ft 11in) waves roaring inland on Santa Cruz Island, in the south Pacific, on Wednesday. Around 100 homes across five villages were damaged or destroyed.

Elderly people and at least one child were among those who died after being sucked under the rushing water, said George Herming, a spokesman for the prime minister.
...
The damage appeared to be concentrated on the west side of Santa Cruz, with five villages wiped out, Herming said. Authorities were still struggling to reach the remote area but an estimated 100 homes had been damaged or destroyed, he said.

The tsunami flooded the nearest airstrip and left it littered with debris, preventing relief workers from reaching the region by air.

Andrew Catford, World Vision's director in the Solomon Islands, said the aid agency would attempt to reach some of the most remote communities by boat, delivering supplies and assisting in a thorough assessment of the area. "It's a process that could take some time given the number of remote communities in low-lying atolls," he said

Tsunami-hit Solomons calls for urgent aid

Published on Feb 7, 2013
The Premier of the Solomon Islands region devastated by a tsunami and earthquake is calling for immediate foreign assistance.

A one metre wall of water, triggered by a 8.0-magnitude earthquake, travelled half a kilometre inland wiping out entire villages.

At least eight people have been killed, and more than 3,500 people are now homeless. The death toll may still rise.

The region is being rocked by a series of aftershocks, many greater than magnitude 6.

Premier of the Temotu Province Charles Brown says disaster relief teams are now returning with accurate details of where the damage lies.

Debris everywhere after Solomons disaster.

ONE News Pacific Correspondent Barbara Dreaver says up to 20 villages have been affected and authorities still don't know the fate of some of the more outlying villages, especially in the reef islands.

Dreaver says it is now known that about 6500 people are displaced or homeless and many have lost track of family members.

Health fears for tsunami-hit Solomon Islands

Updated 11 February 2013, 22:09 AEST
...
Authorities in the Solomon Islands fear they could soon be dealing with a health crisis in the wake of last week's deadly earthquake and tsunami.
...
Mr Beu says the relief effort is being hampered by repeated aftershocks that have rattled the remote Santa Cruz islands since a magnitude 8.0 earthquake triggered a metre-high tsunami last Wednesday.

He told Radio Australia's Pacific Beat many people sheltering in makeshift camps are without water and sanitation.

"What the people need most right now is water because the water source that supplies Lata and the villages around Lata township, that water source was destroyed by the tsunami.

"Up in the bush there is no water, people have to literally carry water from Lata and other sources around here in containers for cooking, drinking and general washing. In the near future my fear is an outbreak of diarrhoea and things like that."

The confirmed death toll has risen to 10, while more than 3,000 people are squatting in shelters after their homes were destroyed.
...
The latest aftershock on Monday morning measured 6.3 and was centred 51 kilometres southwest of Lata, at a depth of 35 kilometres, according to the US Geological Survey.
