Sassoon findings: Non-H1N1 viruses killed more kids

PUNE: More children succumbed to viral infections other than the swine flu virus at the Sassoon hospital here in the last five months. Of the 571 children admitted to the hospital with influenza-like illnesses, 13 died of swine flu whereas 32 died due of other infections or associated ailments.
Surprisingly, nine of the 13 children who died of swine flu had no underlying conditions. Hearteningly, all the HIV-positive children who were admitted with swine flu symptoms were cured.
These are some of the findings of the "death audit report" prepared by the hospital, which treated more swine flu patients than any other hospital in the state. The report will be submitted at a high-level meeting of the state health officials on Wednesday.
"In the last five months, the death rate of children who tested positive for swine flu was 2.2 per cent as against 5.6 per cent for children who tested negative but had other viral infections," Aarti Kinikar, head of the paediatric unit of the hospital, told TOI on Tuesday. Some of the other viral infections that the children succumbed to were respiratory syncytial virus, human metapneumovirus and the seasonal influenza virus, she said.
Kinikar said four of the 13 swine flu positive children who died had co-morbid conditions but the remaining had no underlying medical ailment.
"On the other hand, we had children with HIV/AIDS as well as children with metabolic disorders and even congenital heart ailments who were cured of swine flu after being administered Tamiflu. Of the 72 swine flu positive children who were discharged after being treated, at least 33 had various underlying ailments," she added.
Till date, as many as 157 people in Pune have lost their lives to swine flu ? the highest number of deaths in the country.
Sassoon hospital dean Arun Jamkar said experts from the government medical colleges in Pune, Nagpur, Solapur and Aurangabad will share their findings about H1N1 casualties at the Wednesday meeting. "This will be comprehensive review meeting of the swine flu deaths in the state. Top bureaucrats and state health officials will also take part in the meeting," he added.
