Filipino nurse in Riyadh dies from lethal respiratory disease

MANILA, Philippines ? A Filipina nurse in a hospital in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia was the first Overseas Filipino Workers (OFW) to die from Middle East Respiratory Syndrome coronavirus (MERS-CoV), the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said Tuesday.
?Our Embassy in Riyadh confirmed that a 41-year-old Filipina staff nurse at a hospital in Riyadh died last August 29,? DFA spokesman Raul Hernandez told reporters in a press briefing.
?Based on a medical report obtained by the Embassy, the deceased ?tested positive for the coronavirus before her death?,? he said.

Citing a report from the VIP ward supervisor of the hospital where the Filipina nurse worked and died, Hernandez said the Filipina went to the United States for a vacation on July 13. She returned to Ryadh on July 19 and reported for work on July 21.

On August 12, she was admitted to the hospital after a fishbone got stuck in her throat. She was discharged on August 14.

Five days later, she complained of fever and coughing. She developed respiratory distress and was put on a ventilator on August 22. Two days later, she was diagnosed with severe pneumonia and had to be transferred to the hospital?s intensive care unit.

?Per the hospital?s supervisor, another Filipina is currently confined at the same hospital after testing positive for Mers-COV,? Hernandez said.

This other patient was brought by her employer to the hospital for dialysis. She was infected during her confinement, but is now recovering.

Is this the same case?

This case is part of a cluster of cases at Prince Sultan Military Hospital in Riyadh denied by the Ministry of Health. In particular they denied that a Saudi nurse had died. I guess a nurse from the Philippines does not matter.

According to Wikipedia, in 2010, the Commission on Overseas Filipinos estimated that approximately 9.5 million Filipinos worked or resided abroad (link). Also, according to Wikipedia -

Saudi Arabia is currently the largest hirer of Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs),<sup id="cite_ref-4" class="reference">[4]</sup> and has the largest Filipino population in the Middle East.<sup id="cite_ref-5" class="reference">[5]</sup> Filipinos make up the fourth-largest group of foreigners in Saudi Arabia,<sup id="cite_ref-PBSN_1-1" class="reference">[1]</sup>

Perhaps as many as 1.8 million Filipinos are working and living in Saudi Arabia (link).

Based on the post by Ronan the second infected Filipino woman was probably not a health care worker but was infected during dialysis treatment. Reports of additional Filipino infections among non-health care workers in Saudi Arabia should be evaluated for human-to-human transmission.

Officials in the Philippines announced today that a 41-year-old Filipino nurse who was working in Saudi Arabia recently died of Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus (MERS-CoV) illness and that a second Filipina there is infected but recovering, according to media reports.
The deceased woman fell ill in mid-August and died Aug 29 at a hospital in Riyadh, according to Raul Hernandez, a spokesman for the Philippine Department of Foreign Affairs, as reported today by GMA News, based in Quezon City, Philippines.
Hernandez said the second woman was brought to the same hospital for dialysis, was infected while there, and is recovering there. The story did not disclose the name of either patient or the age or occupation of the second woman.
The 41-year-old is the first Filipino to die of MERS, the story said. The report also appears to mark the first clear confirmation of MERS-CoV in a foreign guest worker in Saudi Arabia. The country's Ministry of Health (MOH) has referred to a number of previous case-patients as "residents" rather than "citizens," but it has not listed their home countries.
In May a World Health Organization expert, Anthony Mounts, MD, voiced concern that guest workers from countries such as India and the Philippines could contract MERS-CoV in Saudi Arabia and bring it home. He worried that that step could spread the virus to a country where disease surveillance is not very strong.
The media information about the Filipino nurse appears to match up with a Sep 5 statement from the Saudi MOH, which reported the death of a "41-year-old female resident working in the health sector in Riyadh." The statement gave no other details about her.
According to the GMA story, an official at the Riyadh hospital said the nurse complained of fever and coughing in mid August, was put on a ventilator on Aug 22, and was transferred to the hospital's intensive care unit 2 days later. The official said the woman had vacationed in the United States in mid July.
The story said at least 1 million Filipino workers are living in Saudi Arabia.

41-year-old female Filipino nurse died of MERS coronavirus in Saudi Arabia last month, the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said on Tuesday.

The Filipino, whose identity was not disclosed, is the first reported fatality from the Philippines. She died at a hospital in Riyadh last August 29.

A medical report obtained by the Philippine Embassy says the deceased “tested positive for the coronavirus before her death,” Foreign Affairs spokesman Raul Hernandez told a press briefing.

The hospital’s VIP ward supervisor said prior to her death, the Filipina went to the United States for a vacation on July 13. She returned to Riyadh on July 19 and reported for work on July 21.

In mid-August, she complained of fever and coughing and developed respiratory distress. She was put on a ventilator on Aug. 22.

Two days later, she was diagnosed with severe pneumonia and had to be transferred to the hospital’s Intensive Care Unit.

No public threat from repatriation of Filipina nurse who died from Coronavirus, says DOH chief

MANILA ? The repatriation of 41-year-old Filipina nurse who died from Coronavirus in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia will not pose a public health risk, Health Secretary Enrique Ona said Thursday.


"The coronavirus also dies with its host," Ona said, adding that after two to three days, the danger of spreading the virus is gone.
The health chief however advised all overseas Filipino workers (OFWs), especially those who are stationed in Saudi Arabia and other Middle Eastern countries, to immediately seek medical attention when not feeling well.
"Those who have experienced fever, cough, shortness of breath, diarrhea, or any other symptoms, should have themselves checked by a doctor immediately," Ona said.
He said the Department of Health (DOH) will continue to be vigilant, especially in the country's port of entry such as airports and seaports. Arriving passengers are advised to immediately seek medical attention when they have fever and cough.
