Teenage girl with swine flu dies at Royal Hospital for Sick Children

A teenage girl suffering from swine flu has died in a Scottish hospital. The 15-year-old, who had underlying health problems, was admitted to the Royal Hospital for Sick Children at Yorkhill in Glasgow a week ago.
She is the fourth person to die from swine flu north of the Border and the 30th to die from the virus in Britain.
News of her death comes a day after it emerged that a pregnant woman was critically ill in a hospital in Ayrshire. Pregnant women are especially susceptible to swine flu, especially when they are in the later stages.
Nicola Sturgeon, the Scottish Health Secretary, said: ?The tragic death of this young girl is devastating for her family and friends, and I would like to express my sincere condolences.
?As we have seen in previous cases, this patient was suffering from underlying health conditions and her death should not cause alarm among the general population.?
Ms Sturgeon said that the risk to the public remained low and pointed out that most cases were relatively mild.
The pregnant woman is in intensive care at Crosshouse Hospital in Kilmarnock. She had gone to the maternity unit feeling unwell and tests confirmed that she had contracted the H1N1 virus.
Her family said in a statement that her condition was improving. ?We are focusing on caring for our loved one and would ask for privacy during a very difficult time for our family,? the statement said. ?We are grateful for the care and support we are all receiving from hospital and public health staff.
?Our loved one is making progress. We wish to concentrate on this treatment and recovery and will not be making any further statement.?
According to the latest government figures 25 people per 100,000 in Scotland are reporting to doctors for flu consultations, a third of the number in England.
