Four more swine flu deaths confirmed

Health Secretary Nicola Sturgeon confirms more fatalities in outbreak.

Another four Scots have died with swine flu, the government have confirmed. Three of the deaths were in the greater the Greater Glasgow and Clyde area. One of those who died was a 16-year-odl youth.

Health Secretary Nicola Sturgeon confirmed the deaths at a news conference with Scotland's chief medical officer Dr Harry Burns in Edinburgh on Thursday afternoon.

The new figures take the total number of deaths in Scotland of people with swine flu to 21.

On Wednesday a 58-year-old woman from the Scottish Borders was confirmed as the 17th person in Scotland to die with swine flu. The previous day a 59-year-old woman from Fife also died with the H1N1 strain.

Meanwhile, the programme to vaccinate Scots against swine flu was launched on Wednesday. Health Secretary Nicola Sturgeon launched the campaign to vaccinate 1.3 million people at Glasgow?s New Victoria Infirmary, where staff and patients were been among those first in line to receive the vaccine.

For the swine flu programme, the "at risk" group includes those of all ages with chronic conditions - but not healthy people over 65. Also being targeted are priority groups like pregnant women, family contacts of those whose immune systems are not working fully, and frontline health and social care workers.

We have only a tenth the population of England but yet twice the deaths... I wonder why ?

England has 99 in intensive care in the new report. The death toll could rise sharply very quickly

Hogweed, can I ask if anybody in here is watching for adverse effects of the vaccine ? I had a look around and don't know where to post this .

Not sure there's a specific vaccine tracking thread but if you post it in the news forum for the appropriate country that would do and a mod can copy it later if there's a specific exisiting thread or one is created. It is vitally important I think to watch for this but remember that a lot of people die or become seriously ill every day without taking the vaccine so some reports will be erroneous but they must not be ignored on that basis and should be rapidly investigated.

I know there have been a few instances of adverse reactions/death but it seems for the most part the vaccine is well tolerated.

Worth watching the ICU bed occupation. I need to check (not sure if it is UK data or England only) but we have @1900 critical care beds, which run at near full occupancy in normal times - so it wont take too much to overload this system, when you take account of normal ICU demands from other conditions. 99 beds would be occupying @5% of national capacity. Let us hope this percentage does not go up too high too fast.

Ming - Re:ADRs. These are being closely watched from many quarters, and most importantly by the regulators and epidemiologists. All the public discussions had to date will have helped to make sure of this. If there is a problem or detectable group that has more ADRs than expected, they will act on it.

Death toll reaches 23 as vaccination programme gets underway.

Two more people have died from swine flu in Scotland.

An 81-year-old woman passed away at Paisley's Royal Alexandra Hospital and a 50-year-old woman died at Glasgow's Western Infirmary.

Both women had significant underlying health conditions.

Health Secretary Nicola Sturgeon said: "I send my sincere condolences to the friends and families of both these women at this very difficult time.

"Vaccination is our best defence against this virus. I urge everyone who is offered the vaccine to accept it, in order in order to help minimise the impact of this virus.

"The vaccination programme is on track. It will have a phased introduction as supplies become available from the manufacturers. Supplies will start to arrive in GP practices from tomorrow but GPs have been advised that it will be into November before all practices have supplies.

"Patients in priority groups will be contacted by their GP when they have to attend for vaccination and we expect to have offered vaccination to all in the priority groups by the end of the year."

The H1N1 virus has now claimed 23 lives in Scotland.

Dr Dean Marshall, Chairman of the BMA's Scottish General Practitioners Committee, said: "Plans for the Scottish vaccination programme haven't changed and are continuing as intended. Patients should still wait to be contacted by their GP.

"GP practices have been planning the vaccination programme for several months and once sufficient supplies arrive in their Practices, they will begin contacting patients in the priority groups."

Two more Scots swine flu deaths


Two more people have died after contracting swine flu in Scotland, taking the total number of deaths related to the virus to 25.

Two adults, one from NHS Lanarkshire and one from NHS Fife, both had "underlying health conditions".

Health Secretary Nicola Sturgeon said a recent increase in deaths related to the H1N1 virus underlined the need to maintain vigilance.

She urged anyone invited to have a vaccination to accept the offer.

She said: ""Our thoughts are with both families at this very sad time.

"The recent increase in H1N1-related deaths are a stark reminder of the importance of being vigilant during the pandemic. It's vital you get the help you need if you believe you are at greater risk of suffering complications from influenza."

She insisted the vast majority of patients would experience only mild symptoms and make a full recovery.

But she added: "Vaccination is our best defence against this virus and I urge everyone who is in a priority group to accept the vaccine when invited to do so by their GP."

Another adult has died after contracting swine flu, the Scottish government has confirmed.

The person, who had underlying health conditions, was from the Borders area and has become the 26th patient to die in Scotland in relation to the virus.

Health Secretary Nicola Sturgeon said: "It is with regret I have to announce another death."

She insisted the vast majority of patients would experience only mild symptoms and make a full recovery.

However, she urged anyone in the designated priority groups to be vaccinated against the virus.

A further H1N1 death has been reported in Scotland.

An adult from NHS Borders area has died after contracting H1N1, bringing the Scottish total of H1N1 related deaths to 26. The patient had underlying health conditions.

Health Secretary Nicola Sturgeon said:

"It is with regret I have to announce another death. I send my condolences to the patient's loved ones at this sad time.

"As we approach winter the number of H1N1 cases, as expected, will rise, but fortunately in the vast majority of H1N1 cases, most people have fairly mild symptoms and make a full recovery within a week.

"Everyone must realise the importance of maintaining hygiene standards, and in seeking medical advice immediately if you believe you are at greater risk of suffering influenza complications.

"Vaccination is our best defence against this virus and I urge everyone who is in the priority groups to accept the vaccine when invited to do so.

"The vaccination programme is being rolled out, but please wait until you are invited before visiting your GP for the vaccine.
