Rafael Correa greets during the military parade for the bicentennial of the independence security chief of the president of Ecuador Rafael Correa, Lt. Col. John Murphy, died Sunday after being hospitalized for a month affected by H1N1 influenza, according to the Government House.
Murphy died Sunday night at the Military Hospital "victim of cardio respiratory arrest" following a month of hospitalization for having contracted the H1N1 virus, said the government statement.
"This Sunday (Merino) remained in intensive care and the condition worsened at 20H00 (01H00 GMT) about when he died," the official part.
According to the message, Correa attended the hospital to offer condolences to the family of the officer, who will be watched on Monday in the Government Palace in Quito.
The death toll in Ecuador affected by the H1N1 flu rose to 36, according to Health Ministry data.
