Spike in Measles Cases Causes Concern in Kosovo
Despite the officially high rate of vaccination in Kosovo, Pristina's main hospital is an epidemic of measles cases for the first time since the war ended in 1999, also causing victims.

Two patients died within a week in the University Clinical Center of Kosovo as the number of patients affected with measles has risen sharply lately, marking the first year that Kosovo has seen cases spike since the war in Kosovo ended in 1999.

Fatmir Bqiri, 37 years old from municipality of Lipjan died on Monday after 20 days being treated in infections clinic.

?The 37 year old victim two months ago was diagnosed with tuberculosis, while more than two weeks ago was diagnosed with measles and was treating in infectious clinic? the spokesperson of UCCK, Shpend Fazliu told BIRN.

?We have 73 cases with measles that are being treated in our clinic but the number is changing every day,? the director of infections at the clinic, Hamdi Ramadani, told BIRN on Monday.

Ramadani said that since June, when the first outbreak of measles was reported in Kosovo, over 140 patients had received treatment at the infections centre of the University Clinical Center, CUCCK. On Friday, they received around 10 new cases, he added.

Ramadani said the situation was serious but under control and there was no need to panic...

Measles epidemic in Kosovo; new case in central Serbia

A patient from Kosovska Mitrovica in northern Kosovo, who was visiting Kragujevac, central Serbia, has developed the symptoms of measles, it has been confirmed.

The daily Vecernje Novosti writes that this is the second case of the spread of the disease from Kosovo and Metohija, since an epidemic of measles was reported there.

RTS recently said the contagious disease was spreading in some municipalities in Kosovo, including those with a Serb population, and that one infant had died. In Pristina alone, there have been about 100 cases reported...

Belgrade: 20-year-old dies of complications caused by measles

A 20-year-old man from Belgrade has died in a hospital?s intensive care unit from complications caused by measles, RTS is reporting.

He is the first victim of measles in Serbia. The patient had not been inoculated against the infectious disease.

Since October, a total of 630 persons in central Serbia and in Serb-majority areas in Kosovo and Metohija contracted the disease, the Public Health Institute Batut announced on Tuesday...

4-year-old dies from complications caused by measles

A four-year-old child from Vranjska Banja has died from complications caused by measles, the Public Health Institute Batut has confirmed.

The child, who was not vaccinated against measles and who developed pneumonia, is officially the sixth victim of the infectious disease.

There have been 2,896 cases of measles in central Serbia and in Serb municipalities in Kosovo since October, with 1,448 cases confirmed in Torlak Institute's laboratories.

The youngest patient was 15 days old, while the oldest was 65...
