Every day Americans wake up to news reports that warn us about the dangers of influenza, especially the new H1N1 ?swine flu?.

But swine flu is mild for most people and the virus is not mutating into a more serious form.

Millions of people around the world have recovered from swine flu, and millions more will get sick with fevers, body aches, nasal congestion, cough and sometimes diarrhea and vomiting and recover from it this year and next year without any complications.
Nonetheless, wide-scale vaccination is being encouraged -- even though swine flu vaccines have been tested on only a few thousand healthy Americans for a few weeks. There is little or no information about how safe the vaccine is for pregnant women and chronically ill or disabled children.

If you or your child are injured from getting a flu swine flu shot, you are on your own. Congress has shielded the vaccine manufacturers and any person giving swine flu shots from lawsuits if people get hurt.
There is no funded government vaccine injury compensation program for swine flu vaccine.

Do NOT let a doctor or anyone else tell you that a serious health problem you or your child experiences after vaccination is a coincidence and allow more shots to be given until you know for sure.
The most tragic cases of vaccine injury occur when vaccine reaction symptoms are dismissed as a 'coincidence" and more vaccines are given that result in more severe symptoms -- and sometimes end with permanent brain and immune system damage or death.
But while Americans are still debating whether to roll up their sleeves for a swine flu shot, companies have already figured it out: vaccines are good for business.

Drug companies have sold $1.5 billion worth of swine flu shots, in addition to the $1 billion for seasonal flu they booked earlier this year. These inoculations are part of a much wider and rapidly growing $20 billion global vaccine market.

"The vaccine market is booming," says Bruce Carlson, spokesperson at market research firm Kalorama, which publishes an annual survey of the vaccine industry. "It's an enormous growth area for pharmaceuticals at a time when other areas are not doing so well," he says, noting that the pipeline for more traditional blockbuster drugs such as Lipitor and Nexium has thinned.

As always with pandemic flus, taxpayers are footing the $1.5 billion check for the 250 million swine flu vaccines that the government has ordered so far and will be distributing free to doctors, pharmacies and schools. In addition, Congress has set aside more than $10 billion this year to research flu viruses, monitor H1N1's progress and educate the public about prevention.

Drugmakers pocket most of the revenues from flu sales, with Sanofi-Pasteur, Glaxo Smith Kline and Novartis cornering most of the market.
But some say it's not just drugmakers who stand to benefit. Doctors collect copayments for special office visits to inject shots, and there have been assertions that these doctors actually profit handsomely from these vaccinations.

Re: Serious Vaccine Reactions to Now Be Called 'Coincidence'?

I note from his website that Dr Mercola believes nobody should get an influenza vaccine of any type and further that

http://articles.mercola.com/sites/articles/archive/2009/10/13/Dr-Oz-Helps-Shill-the-Flu-Vaccine.aspx

was listening to Dr. Bob Sears, who is a vaccine advocate (with a much different schedule for getting them), say that he was convinced of the germ theory. That?s when I realized that that is precisely what was going on. They fully believe that the viruses and bacteria are responsible for all the damage.

It is my belief, and that of nearly all natural health care practitioners, that these infectious agents only serve as triggers to cause the illness, but what is required or responsible for the actual infection is a dysfunctional immune system.

When I lecture, I frequently use the analogy of disease to darkness and health to light. If you shine a light in a dark room it is not dark anymore. Darkness and light simply can?t coexist. Similarly if you are healthy you can have enormous exposure to infectious agents and you simply will NOT get sick. Just like light and darkness it is very difficult, if not impossible in most cases, for a strong immune system and infectious disease to exist together.

Re: Serious Vaccine Reactions to Now Be Called 'Coincidence'?

Be very careful of following this advice. It shows a blatant lack of understanding of cytokinesis (cytokine storms) and immune systems which are at their peak. The very reason children, teens and pregnant women are dying in such high numbers is because of their superlative immune systems. Their immune systems instead of chugging along like an old clunker car, are revving with no way to scale the engine back down. The foot is pressed to the metal floorboard of the car. In the cars case it runs the engine into the red zone and you have a very expensive repair bill. In the case of humans you have a substance called fibrin which runs amok. Instead of doing the job of stopping the internal bleeding it causes bleeding. The bill here is emergency hospitalization and often death.

I would certainly avoid any vaccine containing an adjuvant but, a vaccine without one has been tested and appears to be fine.

So all Canadians should avoid the H1 vaccine because the only one that's coming is with an adjuvant?

Re: Serious Vaccine Reactions to Now Be Called 'Coincidence'?

I would demand a vaccine without an adjuvant. If that was all that was offered, I am not sure what I would do. See the attached thread for why I would avoid a vax with an adjuvant.

http://www.flutrackers.com/forum/showthread.php?t=129054

I emailed "Revere" at Effect Measure and asked whether this recent article by SusanC changed his mind on adjuvants as I have to admit I am concerned even if some don't think so. The response was that he and Susan know each other very well and that he simply thinks she is wrong here (but she thinks he is wrong) and the recent article hasn't changed his mind. He is concerned that many lives will be lost if people follow advice not to take an adjuvanted vaccine. His advice to me was to get it if offered. Incidentally he also believes the US should use adjuvants.

I am only posting his advice so please nobody jump on me.

Re: Serious Vaccine Reactions to Now Be Called 'Coincidence'?

As I am not a medical doctor - I cannot tell people what to do. But, as the choice here is eventual infection or vaccine, I would opt for the vax. As I said above, if my choice was a vax with an adjuvant or none at all, I don't know what I would do. The statistics in the study suggest a 2.5% rate for hospitalization. That rivals 1918.

Re: Serious Vaccine Reactions to Now Be Called 'Coincidence'?

I am in the US, so exposure to adjuvants via the H1N1 vaccine (if I ever have access :) ) is not an issue.

But I have received multiple vaccines containing adjuvant (hepatitis, typhoid, others probably) so I am generally unconcerned about future exposures.

And there's my biggest worry - that this follows the 1918 timescale but maybe slightly delayed. If the models are correct then this wave will peak in the USA just about Halloween. Statistically if you are going to catch it you will probably have caught it by about then or shortly after. If the wave peaks in the rest of the Northern Hemisphere shortly after that then the vaccine will be too late for most everywhere :-(

If the models are wrong and this builds much more slowly then the vaccines may be in time for many more. We will know very soon.

Re: Serious Vaccine Reactions to Now Be Called 'Coincidence'?

As people may have picked up, I am pro-vaccination but have deep reservations on squalene based adjuvants for some groups of people, until there is data to show that the balance of risks in these particular groups are acceptable.

It is known that there may be a strong genetic predisposition to autoimmune disease, based on the data. In my case, I am advising my children to get the vaccine, but to decline it if the GSK vaccine is the only one available/ offered. Why? Whilst both within their early 20's , on thier father's side there is a family history of rheumatoid arthritis. On mine, hypothyroidism as a consequence of an autoimmune response, and my eldest sister also suffered autoimmune liver disease after a period of high stress - we nearly lost her before the auto-immune response could be controlled. As such, the probability that my children carry genes that increase their risks of an auto-immune disease are high, and since they dont have other risk factors and the disease is mild in the majority, on a balance of relative risks, I would like them vaccinated but I dont want them exposed to adjuvant, even if the resulting immunogencity from a non adjuvanted vaccine provides a reduced level of cross protection.

In the case of pregnant women, I think we should be providing vaccine without adjuvant as much for the child as the mother, but if that option is not available, there has to be a balance of risks decision made here. a risk of increased sensitisation, perhaps to the foetus vs a known severe increase in risks of death and severe disease from H1N1 swine flu infection. If my daughter was pregnant, with our familial history, it is a call she would have to make - but I would rather we deal with the consequences of an ADR than lose her.

Perhaps the greatest concern is what the effects are or might be in young children whose immune systems are immature and not fully developed who may also be predisposed to severe ADRs a consequence of adjuvant vaccines. There is inadequate data in either of these groups of individuals, and what data there is in children, as Dr. chu has pointed out time and again, is very concerning - 2 serious ADRS in a group as small as 300 children on the GSK trials does not pose a good 'balance of risks' unless a child has an underlying condition that places them at increased risk of severe H1N1 infection and death.

However, let me emphasise again for people who DO NOT HAVE this dilemma, such as US citizens - a straight vaccine without adjuvant is a non issue here and a no-brainer. Everyone who can get it should be vaccinated - so if you are in the US take up the vaccine offer if its offered.

For the rest of us elsewhere if offered GSK or Novartis vaccine with no alternative -well we will have to weigh the risks according to known predispositions and our individual and personal beliefs, and make our own choices. I certainly do not 'buy' the mantra that this is just another vaccine, no more or less harmful or risky than a standard seasonal vaccine. I am a scientist by training (even if not a practicing research scientist anymore) and the data do not indicate this. Adjuvant vaccines are probably fine for older individuals (say 50+) but there is inadequate clincial data with adjuvant vaccines used in younger age groups, and certainly not enough to say that it is safe for all populations or to ahve detected exclusion groups.

To quote Dr. Chu - someone, somewhere go through the data and the concerns and arguments raised and show us we are wrong, based on the scientific data and clincial studies that are available. Debunk the science if you can, and show us scientifically why these concerns are wrong, dont just try and shout the science down or intimate that we are irresponsible for raising these questions, and do us all a favour.

All I will say, is that the silence on this matter is deafening.

Re: Serious Vaccine Reactions to Now Be Called 'Coincidence'?

I also have grave concerns about squalene as an adjuvant. I am not convinced of its short or long term safety. I have no concerns about the H1N1 vaccine without adjuvant (U.S. version). The reality is, it is no different than the seasonal influenza vaccines that have been around for many years. Each year a new vaccine is made to cover the latest version of influenza in circulation. Well, this vaccine is no different. H1N1 is just the latest version of influenza floating around. And, it is made in exactly the same way as previous influenza vaccines. I don't understand all the hype and paranoia. Of all years to get the vaccine, this one is probably the most important because of the potential morbidity and mortality from this strain.

As for me, I am in Canada and don't have a lot of choices. Both of my daughters are training in healthcare and I have suggested they say their periods are a little late (?pregnant) in the hope they will be given vaccine without adjuvant. As for the rest of my family, if I can't get my hands on vaccine without adjuvant, I would still opt for us getting the vaccine.

Re: Serious Vaccine Reactions to Now Be Called 'Coincidence'?

I don't understand all the hype and paranoia.
I think people heard the stories about the 1976 swine flu vaccine and assume the "swine flu" is the problem, not realizing that all H1N1 originated from swine.

They also heard about the "new" cell culture technology, H1N1 cell culture vaccines, concerns about the "new" cell culture vaccines in general, but they not understanding that most people won't be getting this new technology.

So issue complexity and fear that goverment is not totally truthful leads to unwarranted vaccine avoidance.

Re: Serious Vaccine Reactions to Now Be Called 'Coincidence'?

I think people need to develop a healthy fear for the potential devastation this virus may cause. Can anyone remember another virus rapidly killing young healthy people (unless you are over 90 yrs old)?
