ESTE, six egrets carcasses were found into wastewater near small town of Este, Padua Province, North-east Italy, Veneto Region, according 'il mattino di Padova' daily newspaper (page 42). A resident found the carcasses and took photos of them prior to inform local police station, article said.
Although the wastewater may contain sewage from a garbage storage and treatment facility, local authorities tend to exclude a possible poisoning as causative for egrets death.
Carcasses were at 300 meters from the facility.
Health, enivronmental and veterinary officials are investigating the incident but prelimiary physical examination suggest no relation with avian influenza. Further necroscopic and laboratory analysis are underway.
Este town and surrounding area host extensive industrial poultry farming activities, and in the past several widespread LPAI / HPAI H5/H7 epizootics were reported, with massive animal loss.
Local authorities suspect that the birds death is related to poisoning as farmers largerly use chemicals to clean machinery, and the birds may have eaten some contaminated soil or water.
