Team checks suspected measles cases

THE Department of Health has sent an outbreak response team to investigate a suspected measles outbreak in Ukhahlamba District Municipality?s Mkhonya village.
Department spokesperson Sizwe Kupelo said health authorities in the Senqu local municipality had detected six suspected cases, to which the department had dispatched a team of health professionals to investigate .
?We have also made available ... measles vaccine, and would like to encourage parents whose children have a rash and exhibit flu symptoms ... to rush them to the nearest clinic,? said Kupelo.
He added that the team would remain in the area for a week while they investigated whether there were more measles cases .
?M easles is highly contagious,? he said.
Kupelo also encouraged parents to ensure that they kept their children?s immunisation up to date, saying that those who had not had their measles shot should be taken for one immediately.
