UN warns of cholera outbreak in Somalia
The United Nations humanitarian agency has warned of cholera outbreak in the Somali capital, Mogadishu and south central Somalia due to unhygienic living conditions, Press TV reports.

The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) reported a steady increase in suspected cholera cases from April 9 to May 6 in southern and central regions of Somalia.

Banadir region in southern Somalia accounts for 49 percent of the 777 cases reported between April 30 and May 6, representing an 11 percent increase from the week before the end of April.

OCHA says that although these figures do not suggest a major epidemic, there are serious concerns of an increased risk of a cholera outbreak in Banadir region and the Balcad and Afgooye corridors, where there is a high density of internally displaced persons (IDPs)...

MOGADISHU, 18 September 2012 (IRIN) - A suspected cholera outbreak has killed about a dozen people in the southern Somali village of Hoosingo, in the district of Badade in Lower Juba, say government and health officials.

?One of the biggest problems we have is that we do not what this disease is,? Adan Ibrahim Dhaqane, the Hoosingo Village commissioner, told IRIN by telephone.

?Schools, madrasas [and] restaurants are all closed to prevent the disease from spreading,? he said.

Dhaqane said that at least 19 people had died since the outbreak started on 5 September, with 12 others sick.

A suspected cholera outbreak has killed at least 19 people since the beginning of September, with 12 still sick in the southern Somali village of Hoosingo in Lower Juba, the United Nations IRIN news service reported Tuesday (September 18th).

"One of the biggest problems we have is that we do not know what this disease is," said Hoosingo village commissioner Aden Ibrahim Dhaqane. Schools, religious centres and restaurants have been closed to prevent the outbreak from spreading, he said.

GARISSA (Xinhua) -- At least 35 people have been confirmed dead following cholera outbreak along the Kenyan-Somali border mainly in a settlement close to the border with Somalia.

Among those who have died are 10 Kenyans who had moved with their animals across Somalia in search of water and pasture. Some deaths have occurred on the Somalia side.

Kenya Red Cross Society (KRCS) Regional Health Officer Daniel Langat said the disease started on Sept. 20 in Hosingo in Somalia, about 50 km from the Kenyan border before spreading to other villages that are along the border.

"Two person died in Holungo, two in Amuma, three in Hamey and three in Dgahaley," Langat told a news conference in Amey in northern Kenya in one of the centers which have been established.
