Somalia: 72 Cases of Measles Reported in Afmadow

A measles outbreak has been reported in Afmadow affecting 72 people, 50 of them children under the age of five, Somalia's Radio Bar-Kulan reported Monday (May 26th).

Hassan Mursal, director general of Afmadow Hospital, attributed the rise in measles cases to the absence of available vaccinations in the area over the last two years.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) estimates that measles vaccine coverage in Somalia is less than 30%, according to RBC Radio.

Measles outbreaks have been confirmed in Benadir, Lower Jubba, Mudug, Nugal and Galbeed regions since February, and the number of cases reported in the country has jumped from 1,200 in the first months of 2013 to 2,300 in the first months of 2014...

Mogadishu: Thousands of children in war-torn Somalia are facing death or disability due to an outbreak of highly contagious measles, the United Nations said on Tuesday.

Recent rates of infection are four times higher than the same time last year, and a vaccination campaign must be "urgently conducted to prevent thousands of avoidable deaths", the UN children's agency UNICEF and the World Health Organization (WHO) warned in a joint statement...
