Investigation in Torrevieja after six year old suddenly dies from Swine Flu virus

The regional health department has opened an investigation into the sudden death from the H1N1 virus of a young boy in Torrevieja last week. The analyses which detected the presence of the virus have, it?s understood, also shown up indications of an underlying health condition which could not be diagnosed owing to his young age. The boy was six years old. No information has been released on the nature of his medical condition.

The child?s mother works in the administration department of the Torrevieja district hospital where the boy was rushed last Thursday morning. Diario Informaci?n said he arrived there unconscious, despite his father?s attempts to revive him during the journey to the hospital. Casualty doctors were unable to do anything to save the boy?s life.

On the Costa del Sol, El Mundo reports that a union has placed a complaint against the Social Security inspectorate after a pregnant nurse contracted the A flu virus at her place of work, the hospital in Antequera. They claim she was turned down when she applied for leave over the risk of contracting the virus from the patients in her care.

The SATSE nursing union also claims hospital management failed to transfer her to another department where there would have been no risk from the virus.

La Conselleria de Sanidad investiga las causas de los fallecimientos de forma repentina de dos ni?os de seis y ocho a?os en el hospital de Torrevieja y el centro de salud de Carlet. Mientras del menor de Torrevieja, que falleci? el pasado jueves, est? constatado que ten?a la gripe A, en el caso del ni?o de Llombai, s?lo ha trascendido hasta el momento que acudi? al centro de salud con fiebre y dificultades respiratorias.

El ni?o de ocho a?os de Llombai falleci? el domingo por la tarde en el centro de salud de Carlet por causas que a?n se investigan. El menor, que resid?a con su familia en Llombai, fue trasladado al ambulatorio la ma?ana del domingo, aunque fue derivado de nuevo a su domicilio por el m?dico de guardia tras realizarle una exploraci?n.

Seg?n explicaron ayer allegados a la familia, el estado del ni?o empeor? despu?s de la primera visita al ambulatorio, por lo que sus padres optaron por trasladarlo de nuevo a primera hora de la tarde. El fallecimiento se produjo a las 15.53 horas. El menor iba a cumplir justo ayer ocho a?os y jugaba desde hac?a varios a?os en el equipo de f?tbol de la Mancomunitat.

La Guardia Civil ha instruido diligencias, que pasar?n al juzgado de guardia de Carlet. Las fuentes oficiales del departamento de salud comarcal aseguraron ayer que el menor ingres? en el centro sanitario con parada cardiorespiratoria y que el personal sanitario hizo todos los esfuerzos posibles por reanimarlo. El cuerpo del ni?o ser? sometido a una autopsia para determinar las causas del fallecimiento, que ayer no se conoc?an. Otras fuentes sanitarias apuntaron que el menor podr?a sufrir alguna lesi?n de car?cter cong?nito, que pudo precipitar su muerte.

Conocidos de la familia, que es de origen moldavo pero que reside en la Ribera desde hace a?os, y que acompa?aron a los padres en el centro de salud aseguraron ayer que el menor presentaba dificultad respiratoria y fiebre cuando acudi? por primera vez al ambulatorio y que fue derivado a su domicilio despu?s de recetarle medicamento para rebajar la fiebre. Las mismas fuentes lamentaron que el menor no hubiera sido enviado al hospital de la Ribera.

En el caso del ni?o de 6 a?os de Torrevieja, que falleci? el pasado jueves de forma repentina en el Hospital Torrevieja Salud con gripe A, la conselleria investiga la existencia de patolog?as previas que desencadenaran su fallecimiento. El ni?o, que es hijo de una trabajadora con funciones administrativas del propio centro sanitario, fue trasladado por su padre al hospital comarcal el jueves por la ma?ana, donde lleg? inconsciente. Su padre le estuvo practicando maniobras de reanimaci?n card?aca durante el traslado.

Los facultativos de Urgencias tambi?n le realizaron maniobras de reanimaci?n cadiorrespiratoria durante m?s de hora y media, pero no pudieron hacer nada para salvar la vida del menor, que hab?a presentado un cuadro previo de fiebre, pero cuya sintomatolog?a cuando lleg? al hospital comarcal era "at?pica" en relaci?n a los casos de gripe A graves, seg?n fuentes sanitarias.

Hasta el 31 de agosto, fecha hasta la que se conocen las muertes por gripe A en las comunidades aut?nomas, cuatro personas hab?an fallecido en la Comunitat Valenciana como consecuencia del virus, todas ellas adultas.

La fiscal jefe de Valencia, Teresa Gisbert, ha ordenado a las fiscal?as de Alicante y Alzira que investiguen si hubo negligencias sanitarias en la muerte repentina hace dos semanas de dos ni?os, uno de 6 a?os en Torrevieja con gripe A y otro de 8 a?os con dificultades respiratorias en Carlet. La denuncia parte de la asociaci?n del Defensor del Paciente, que sostiene que no se aplic? el protocolo de detecci?n de la gripe A pese a que los menores presentaban sus s?ntomas.

Tras conocer a trav?s de este diario la muerte de los dos menores, el Defensor del Paciente remiti? a la Fiscal?a de Valencia un escrito en el que consideraba que pudo producirse una presunta negligencia por parte de los m?dicos o de la Administraci?n sanitaria. La asociaci?n sostiene que el ni?o de 6 a?os de Torrevieja "acudi? al centro de salud con un cuadro febril y dificultades respiratorias que deb?a hacer pensar en el diagn?stico de gripe A" y sin embargo "se le remiti? a casa sin hacerle la prueba ni enviarle a un centro hospitalario". El ni?o muri? posteriormente.

Como ya public? este diario, el jueves 12 de noviembre el ni?o fue trasladado por su padre al Hospital Torrevieja Salud, donde lleg? inconsciente. Pese a los esfuerzos por reanimarle no pudieron hacer nada por salvar la vida del menor, que padec?a gripe A. Sanidad abri? entonces una investigaci?n para determinar si exist?an patolog?as previas que hubiesen podido desencadenar el fallecimiento del peque?o.

El Defensor del Paciente sostiene que la muerte en Carlet del ni?o de 8 a?os que presentaba dificultades respiratorias fue similar en cuanto a que "fue trasladado al ambulatorio con fiebre y dificultad respiratoria y tambi?n fue derivado a su domicilio por el m?dico de guardia tras realizarle una exploraci?n sin que se tomaran medidas de prevenci?n".

La presidenta del Defensor del Paciente, Carmen Flores, muestra su satisfacci?n por la decisi?n de la Fiscal?a de Valencia de abrir una investigaci?n por ambos casos y remitirla a las dependencias de Alicante y Alzira para que los tr?mites se sigan en las zonas en las que se produjeron los hechos. La Fiscal?a de Alicante ya ha iniciado el procedimiento para determinar si existe alguna responsabilidad penal por la asistencia sanitaria al ni?o de Torrevieja, como confirm? ayer el fiscal jefe, Juan Carlos L?pez Coig. Para Flores, en estos dos casos "algo ha fallado, pues no se ha aplicado el protocolo para realizarles las pruebas de la gripe A ni se les tuvo en Observaci?n pese a que ten?an fiebre y dificultades respiratorias". En su opini?n, "hubo una presunta negligencia al darles de alta tan r?pido".
Seg?n la denuncia del Defensor del Paciente, la actuaci?n sanitaria en ambos casos "parece id?ntica", a pesar "de estar establecido un protocolo de prevenci?n, m?xime cuando de ni?os se trate". Por ello, "no entendemos tampoco ?por qu? se est?n buscando patolog?as previas?, si desde el momento en que acuden a los centros de salud ya ten?an que haber valorado" su estado. As?, la asociaci?n incide en que "la prevenci?n ahora a los padres no les sirve de nada ni las elucubraciones que se puedan hacerse desde Sanidad".
