Trinidad Jimenez: "The Influenza A affected nearly 30% of the Spanish population '

She says that in Spain there were 300 deaths from the H1N1 virus and that the Government did not buy the vaccines against this disease considering pharmaceutical interests

AGENCIES | MADRID Minister for Health and Social Policy, Trinidad Jimenez yesterday defended the "correct" management of pandemic influenza by the WHO and said that Spain "simply followed the recommendations" of the agency, something that "forces" the international health regulations. Jimenez said the new virus was "around 300" deaths in Spain and that nearly 30% of the population "could pass" the disease, albeit "very slight" said Jimenez.

The owner of Health says the World Health Organization was right with the precautionary measures promoted to influenza A, "a new virus for which there was great uncertainty." "We can not lose sight of the fact that there was a new virus and there were doubts about his behavior, his treatment and was spread throughout the country," he said yesterday in Brussels. As for the accusations of some sectors that link the "undue alarm" WHO with pharmaceutical interests, Jimenez urged to await the results of investigations to be made from the Council of Europe.

Statewide, Jimenez clarified that only three million have been administered vaccines. Therefore rejected "categorically" that have weighed the interests of drug in the number of vaccines that Spain has acquired and maintained that the decision to reserve doses for 30% of the population is the same that applies to seasonal influenza. "The authorities never had contact with pharmaceutical companies that required to sign contracts for the stockpile. The Spanish authorities acted correctly and proportionality to the situation we were experiencing," she summarized.

The effect of seasonal flu, the minister indicated that in 2009 was "displaced" by the influenza virus A, which barely had a prevalence of "4 or 5%" compared with 95% of the new virus. "We don't know what can happen in the future, maybe influenza A has come to settle," he concluded.

Moreover, doctors are clear that the health warning against influenza A has saved three of four critically ill patients who, because of this new virus, have gone through intensive care units (ICUs) in Spain. This is what sustains the president of the Spanish Society of Intensive Care, Critical and Coronary Units (Semicyuc), Christopher Leon, who took stock yesterday of the data reported by 144 Spanish hospitals where, since June, 872 patients have been treated difficulties because of H1N1.

ICU professionals do not share the criticism of the performance of health authorities against infection, is discharged from many areas.

Hi estacion :tiphat:

"30 %" !? How did they know ?

Evidence of a Spanish serologic study ?
? or pure estimation ?
? or more or less kind of extrapolation of the British study data?

Re: Spain death toll: 300 at least (+29 last 25 days)

Hi german docter :tiphat:
I don't know. May be the Flu God rang and told them. :)

I have not found any spanish published studies that endorse this assertion.

Perhaps attack ratio is chewing gum and they can stretch it to where it suits them. Even if you apply maximum english study serological values (5?14-year-olds age group) to all sentinel + lab confirmed cases in Spain, you are ending to have only 15% attack ratio.
