The Health Ministry says about 1000 dengue cases have been identified during the past 10 days in the New year. The dengue control unit of the ministry says over 22.3 million households and premises have been checked for dengue mosquitoes during the past year...

Another attendant of the Kalubowila Hospital had died of Dengue fever on Monday night, hospital sources said.
The deceased identified as Kasun Sameera (28) from Bandarawaththa in Pokunuwita, Horana, had been married to an attendant of the Kalutara General Hospital in Nagoda.


His parents said their son, whose condition had not improved after OPD treatment, was hospitalised on December 27, and that he was treated in the ICU for about eight days.

Dengue fever is on the rise in the Addalaichenai DS division, Addalaichenai Medical Officer of Health Dr. A.L.M. Alawdeen said.

Over 26 dengue cases were reported from the Addalaichenai areas so far this year.

A 36 year-old women, mother of four in Addalaichenai division No. 4, died of dengue last Wednesday.

12 die of Dengue in Kinniya

12 deaths due Dengue are reported from Kinniya over the past two and half weeks. Arun Mohan, the Public Health Officer of Trincomalee, added that Kinniya has the highest number of Dengue patients in the country.

Comment: Kinniya is in Trincomalee district. The district has reported 1,320 cases of Dengue to March 10th. That is the 4th highest district after Colombo (4,973), Gampaha (2,544) and Galle (1,339). The official count of fatalities in Sri Lanka is 24. If 12 are from the 1,320 cases in Trincomalee, then, officially, the other 12 came from the 18,787 cases in the rest of the country. The Health Ministry said that a committee of three persons to conduct investigations on the allegations of the arrest of pregnant woman died due to dengue Colombo South Teaching Hospital.

Acting Director General of Health Services, Ministry of Health PB Bandara has been appointed by the investigation committee.

The Deputy Director General CDDRA's chairmanship to the Committee, other members of the national dengue prevention campaign coordinator Dr. Hasitha Tissera, dengue, Dr. Ananda Wijewickrama were functioning.

Pregnant woman contracted the disease Colombo South Teaching Hospital had died and that the doctors accused.

The Acting Director General of Health has asked the committee to give a report on the Ministry of Health to investigate the allegations.

Dengue forces 3 day closure of 66 schools in Kinniya

Education authorities of the Eastern Province have taken a decision to close 66 government schools in the Kinniya Education Zone in the Trincomalee district for three days starting from yesterday until tomorrow following the rapidly spreading of Dengue in the Trincomalee district.

Dengue outbreak: Kinniya continues to suffer, Gampaha under threat

Kinniya ? A picturesque location that lies on Sri Lanka?s eastern coastline -Kinniya is home to 75,435 persons whose primary sources of income are Fisheries and Agriculture.

With 31 Grama-seva divisions, Kinniya is considered to be a high population density area in the Trincomalee district.

Sadly, the Trincomalee district has been under threat from a Dengue outbreak. It has been wrecking havoc in the entire district, especially in Kinniya.

The death toll in the Trincomalee district as of March 18: 14

Update: March 18 ? The past three months?

Just three months into 2017, the number of dengue patients reported from Trincomalee stand at 1619. Worryingly -960 of them are residents of Kinniya.

Dengue on the rise

The rising tide of Dengue has claimed another life ? a 49 year old pre-school teacher in Mel Watta, Ja Ela.

Meanwhile, a mother of one contracted a fever one week ago. She was admitted to the Negombo General Hospital before being transferred to the Colombo National Hospital, as her condition worsened.

Soaring dengue cases

Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe informed Parliament that the spread of dengue in the country was part of a health crisis in Asia.
Infections of dengue have soared in the country and 40 have died. In the first two-and-a-half months more than 23,000 dengue cases have been reported islandwide with almost 41 per cent from the Western Province which includes Colombo. There have been 5,790 cases so far this month.

Rising death toll from dengue and H1N1

The prevailing unusual weather conditions are contributing towards rising deaths due to dengue and H1N1 influenza, health officials warned yesterday. With the death toll due to dengue rising to 53 in three months and the number of cases increasing to 27,898 the Dengue Control Unit has issued health warnings to 11 districts.

The Dengue epidemic has claimed the lives of 53 individuals over the past ninety days.

The latest victim of the deadly virus was a 23-year-old youth from the Waskaduwa area in Kalutara who passed away today. He was admitted to the Panadura Base Hospital recently, and was subsequently transferred to the ICU after it was revealed that he was suffering from Dengue.

Health officials revealed that over the past four days they have filed cases against 776 persons who had created environments conducive for the breeding of dengue mosquitoes.

Dengue Type 2 strain: Unfamiliar menace

Officials from the Dengue Control Unit are blaming the current dengue outbreak on the appearance of the type 2 dengue virus, which has newly arrived in the country.

?From 2009 until 2016, dengue virus types 1 and 4 were circulating in Sri Lanka. But in 2016, the type 2 virus appeared, which is a virulent strain. Our population is not immune to this variety of dengue, and that is why we are getting many more cases than usual,? said Dengue Control Unit Consultant Community Physician Dr. Preshila Samaraweera.

Sources from the Ministry of Health, Nutrition, and Indigenous Medicine also told the Daily News that the number of dengue cases is on the rise in the country and that the disease will likely cause more deaths in 2017 than it did last year.

Highest number of dengue patients in Colombo:

About 32,143 dengue patients and 61 deaths had been reported from all parts of the country by April 18. The highest number of dengue patients, 7,271, was reported from the Colombo district, Epidemiology Unit sources said.

According to the sources, the second highest number of dengue patients, 3,951, had been reported from the Gampaha district, while the Trincomalee district recorded 3,024 dengue patients during the same period. The Colombo Municipal Council (CMC) area recorded 1,785 dengue patients.
