Death toll of dengue victims rises to 301 in Sri Lanka

COLOMBO, July 25 (Xinhua) -- The number of dengue cases has gone up to 105,000 in Sri Lanka with over 301 deaths, the Sri Lanka Red Cross Society said on Tuesday.
The Red Cross said that it is rapidly scaling up emergency assistance to help contain one of the country's worst-ever outbreak of dengue in recent times.

Cabinet approval has been granted to allocate Rs.300 million to the Health, Nutrition and Indigenous Medicine Ministry to purchase essential equipment to treat dengue patients.

Approval was also granted to train 2,000 Army personnel to provide treatment to dengue patients and also for Health Medical Officers, Local Government institutions, Divisional Secretariats and Police Stations to get involved dengue prevention programmes.

Over ​310 dengue deaths and 110,372 dengue cases were reported from all parts of the country by ​July ​23. The death rate is 0.3 percent,​ ​Health Ministry ​sources said.

​Epidemiology Unit sources said the Western Province recorded the highest number of dengue patients (49,145) and the highest (23,574)​​ from the Colombo district. The Colombo Municipal Council area recorded ​3688 ​dengue patients, while the other parts of the district recorded​ 19,886​ dengue patients.

Dengue deaths reach 327, legal action against 798

A total of 115,605 dengue patients and 327 dengue deaths had been reported from all parts of the country by July 31.

Legal action will be taken against 798 dengue mosquito breeders in the Western Province, the Epidemiology Unit sources said.

The inspecting teams found 1,343 premises with dengue mosquito larvae during the recently completed dengue control programme implemented in the Western Province among 762 homes and two schools. A total of 1247 homes and 37 schools were among them.

The negligible growth in tourist arrivals in August was a result of dengue advisories emanating from several missions in Colombo, Tourism Minister John Amaratunga said.

Tourism, Sri Lanka?s third largest foreign exchange earner, suffered a setback last month, growing by a mere 2.5% year-on-year (YoY) to 190,928, despite it being a peak month?? for tourism due to the Kandy Esala Perahera, which usually draws tourists in large numbers, especially from the UK and the Continent.

For instance, last year?s Esala Perahera season saw these numbers grow by 11.8% YoY to 186,288.

The Tourism Minister speaking to reporters yesterday attributed last month?s negligible growth to ?dengue? advisories emanating from their missions in Colombo warning the citizens of those markets from visiting the islands. ?Even China has warned their citizens of dengue,? said Amaratunga.

Nearly 400 dengue deaths so far this year

A total of 390 dengue deaths and 151,975 dengue patients had been reported this year as at September 15.

About 68 percent of deaths are female dengue patients, the National Coordinator of the National Dengue Control Programme Dr. Hasitha Tissera said.

The National Mosquito Control Week will take place island-wide from September 20 to 26.
