It is one of the most intense storms in world history.

Super Typhoon Haiyan made landfall early Friday morning in Guiuan, a small city in Samar province in the eastern Philippines.

Thousands of people evacuated villages in the central Philippines on Thursday as one of the strongest typhoons in world history took aim the region, which was devastated by an earthquake last month.

Haiyan had intensified and accelerated as it moved closer to the country with sustained winds of 195 mph and ferocious gusts of 235 mph, according to the U.S. Navy's Joint Typhoon Warning Center.

No Atlantic or eastern Pacific hurricane has ever been stronger than Haiyan (typhoons are the same type of storms as hurricanes).

About 10 million people live on the central Philippine islands and are most at risk from a direct strike from Haiyan.

Haiyan was rated as a category-five storm early Thursday, according to Weather Channel lead meteorologist Michael Palmer.

He warned that the storm was likely to cause widespread devastation and "a significant loss of life."

?It?s a very poor country and there is not really any place for these people to go because they are on an island," Palmer added. ?There was a similar typhoon that struck in 1990 which killed 700 people so you are going to see that here, maybe even worse.?

He added: ?It is a perfectly symmetrical storm with the eye completely clear so it is as strong as you can get."

Official reports indicated that two people had been killed after being struck by power lines, another by lightning and possibly one more by a falling tree.

But the final toll is expected to climb much higher as so many affected areas were cut off, said Mathias Eick, of the European commission's humanitarian aid department (Echo) in Manila.

"In our previous experience with similar storms, because the Philippines are comprised of many islands and many isolated communities, often the statistics show a very low human toll [at first] but then within 24 or 48 hours the numbers just take off," he added. "We're talking about a storm where two-thirds of the whole area of the Philippines was directly affected ? not entirely by the eye of the storm but by a very large area ? and with many isolated communities on smaller islands or living in mountainous areas, it takes some time for the authorities, Red Cross and volunteers to collate the information."

About 12 airports were closed ? including those in the tourist islands of Palawan and Boracay ? and schools and offices shut, with roughly 1 million people in shelters scattered around 29 provinces.

Haiyan ? the Philippines' 25th typhoon this year ? has put an estimated 12 million people at risk and as of 10pm local time was still pummelling the country with sustained winds of 120mph and gusts of 143mph, with the eye of the storm located 20 miles west of Coron, Palawan, according to local media.

(Updated 11:06 p.m.)One of the most intense typhoons on record whipped the Philippines Friday, killing at least 33 people and terrifying millions as monster winds tore roofs off buildings and giant waves washed away flimsy homes.

Super Typhoon Haiyan smashed into coastal communities on the central island of Samar, about 600 kilometers southeast of Manila, before dawn on Friday with maximum sustained winds of about 315 kilometers an hour.

"We've had reports of uprooted trees, very strong winds... and houses made of light materials being damaged," Philippine Red Cross chief Gwendolyn Pang told AFP on Friday afternoon as Haiyan swept across the archipelago's central and southern islands.

Offers of help from the international community to victims of Super Typhoon Yolanda are starting to come in, a day after the cyclone battered several parts of the country.

The Philippine Embassy in Washington on Friday night said Americans are giving offers of help including K-9 units and emergency power restoration facilities.

"Offers of assistance received by the Philippine Embassy from Americans include canine dogs and emergency power restoration services," it said on its Twitter account.

Meanwhile, a Catholic group is sending some 8,000 tarpaulins to Cebu City to help families affected by Typhoon Yolanda (Haiyan).

Catholic Relief Services also said its response teams are traveling to the areas hit hardest by the typhoon to determine what people there need.

?The pain of another disaster is devastating. We?re currently moving tarpaulins to Cebu City so that we can provide 8,000 families with inevitable shelter needs. Our response teams are traveling to the areas hardest hit to determine exactly what people need and how CRS can help them,? said Greg Auberry, CRS? regional director for Southeast Asia.

(CNN) -- More than 100 people were killed in a major Philippine coastal city that took the brunt of Super Typhoon Haiyan, authorities said Saturday.

That death toll in Tacloban was the first significant casualty report in a day when authorities began surveying the devastation of a typhoon that has been described as perhaps the strongest storm ever to make landfall in recorded history.

Capt. John Andrews, deputy director of the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines, told CNN that he received a radio report from the Tacloban airport station manager who said there are more than 100 bodies in the street in Tacloban and more than 100 people injured.

Traveling aboard a military cargo plane from Manila, CNN's Paula Hancocks was among the first journalists to see the catastrophe in Tacloban on Saturday.

"It looks as though a tsunami swept through here," she said by satellite phone.

MANILA, Philippines?The number of lives claimed by Supertyphoon ?Yolanda? (international name Haiyan) has increased to 138 a day after it wreaked havoc across the Visayas region.
The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC), in its 6 p.m. report, also recorded 15 injured and four missing persons.
Majority of the casualties, 118, were from Leyte. All were still unidentified.
A total of 4,282,636 persons have been affected in 36 provinces throughout the Visayas region. An estimated 3,438 houses have also been reported damaged because of the strong winds brought by Yolanda.

Typhoon Haiyan death count could reach 10,000 in Central Philippines: officials

About 4 million residents have been affected by the category 5 storm, with 800,000 forced to abandon their homes. More than 1,000 bodies were seen floating in the flooded remains of the city of Tacloban after the typhoon hit, Red Cross officials said.

The Philippines death toll could reach 10,000 Sunday, officials said after a brutally powerful typhoon with 170 mph winds and a tree-high storm surge reduced one major city to rubble.
Officials are continuing to count the growing number of dead from Typhoon Haiyan, which cut a devastating path of horror through a half-dozen islands in the Central Philippines.

Regional police chief Elmer Soria said he was briefed by Leyte provincial Gov. Dominic Petilla late Saturday and told there were about 10,000 deaths on the island, mostly by drowning and from collapsed buildings. The governor's figure was based on reports from village officials in areas where Typhoon Haiyan slammed Friday.

Tacloban city administrator Tecson Lim said that the death toll in the city alone "could go up to 10,000."

The usual cause of death from typhoons in the Philippines is from mudslides and river flooding, as waterways swell with rainwater.

So when Haiyan sped across the islands on Friday, some officials and weather experts in the Philippines thought they had witnessed something of a miracle. The storm that lit up social media for days with dire warnings was thought to have mostly spared the islands because it did not linger long enough to dump a deluge of rainwater.

What they did not factor into their hopeful assessments was a storm surge that some reports said was 13 feet in Tacloban, and which left a trail of destruction that in some ways mirrored the aftermath of tsunamis...

President Aquino had urged residents to leave low-lying areas, but he did not order an evacuation. On Sunday, he toured some stricken areas and declared a ?state of calamity...

Lynette Lim, a spokeswoman for Save the Children, weathered the storm in a local government office in Tacloban before leaving the city on a military aircraft Sunday morning. She said that even schools, gymnasiums and other sites that the local government had designated as evacuation centers had failed to hold up against the powerful winds.

Zeigler, the director general of the International Rice Research Institute in Los Ba?os, Philippines, said that he was very concerned that the damage reports seemed to be mainly from Tacloban, where aid has so far been concentrated, and not from the many fishing communities that line the coast.

?The coastal areas can be quite vulnerable ? in many cases, you have fishing communities right up to the shoreline, and they can be wiped out? by a powerful storm surge, he said. ?The disturbing reports are the lack of reports, and the areas that are cut off could be quite severely hit.?

One of the most powerful storms ever recorded, typhoon Haiyan leveled Basey, a seaside town in Samar province about 10 km (6 miles) across a bay from Tacloban in Leyte province, where at least 10,000 people were killed, according to officials.

About 2,000 people were missing in Basey, said the governor of Samar province.

"The situation is bad, the devastation has been significant. In some cases the devastation has been total," Secretary to the Cabinet Rene Almendras told a news conference.

The United Nations said officials in Tacloban, which bore the brunt of the storm on Friday, had reported one mass grave of 300-500 bodies. More than 600,000 people were displaced by the storm across the country and some have no access to food, water, or medicine, the U.N. says.
