TWO nurses at the country?s TB Hospital in Manzini died last year after contracting the deadly disease, President of the Swaziland Democratic Nurses Union (SWADNU) Bheki Mamba has disclosed.
He mentioned that this was as a result of the lack of ventilating mechanisms at the hospital, which would ensure sufficient circulation of the air so that the germs could be blown out of the wards. He said as a result, nurses at the hospital had staged a number of strikes in a bid to force the ministry of health to address this issue, but all their efforts had been in vain.
Mamba stated that when the hospital was constructed, consultants from South Africa were brought in to advise government on how the infection of nurses and the public could be prevented at the hospital. He said they advised that a mechanical ventilation system that involved the use of UV (ultra violet) lights be installed to integrate the germs in the air and extractor sensors that would force the germs out of the wards.
