Swedish vaccination coverage estimated at 61 per cent

The Swedish National Board of Health and Welfare estimates that 61 percent of the Swedish population have already
been vaccinated against the 2009 pandemic influenza A(H1N1) virus. This is revealed in a report released on the 22nd of
December. Of the 39 percent who have not yet been vaccinated, approximately one third respond that they will do so.
This would give a vaccination coverage of approximately 70 percent.

Yet another week with reduced flu spread

The number of reported laboratory confirmed cases of novel influenza decreased by over 60 percent compared with week 49. In total, in Sweden 10 873 cases now reported. During week 50 reported 162 new cases compared to 425 during week 49. Overall, the picture in Sweden very homogeneous with an average of about 2 verified cases per 100 000 inhabitants week 50 compared with 5 weeks 49th Hospitalization is indicated for 11 percent of cases. The increasing number of countries in the northern hemisphere seems now the current pandemic wave passing. The new influenza A (H1N1) in Sweden

The number of laboratory confirmed cases decreased in all counties. J?mtland and Kronoberg had the highest incidence of about 5 cases per 100 000 inhabitants. No verified cases reported from Gotland and Blekinge.

Hospitalization was reported for 18/162 (11 percent), a marginal increase over the previous weeks. A 72-year-old man with severe underlying disease died during the week (link).
Sentinel reporting on the proportion of influenza-like illness among patients who have sought to show that GPs 23/7142 (0.32 percent) reported patient visits were suspected influenza-like illness week 50 compared with 0.42 percent week 49. The percentage of positive samples in the sentinel samples fell to 8.50 percent and the number of searches on V?rdguiden was virtually unchanged from week 49.
In the population-based reporting in Stockholm, I'll report, the proportion of reports of respiratory infections, and influence-like illness as big as the previous week. Based on figures from the Hospital Report and sentinel sampling SMI estimates that between 4 000 and 10 000 people may have fallen ill with flu in the country during the week 50 and that between 240 000 and 612 000 people may have had the flu for weeks 38th Safety when on the last week's figures, however, is less than before, because they are based on few complaints and very few sentinel samples.

Virology

SMI has characterized 107 Swedish strains of novel influenza. Of these, 9 from ECMO and 5 patients from intensive care or respiratory nursed patients and 5 from deceased patients. For 51 of these, we have characterized the h?magglutininet with respect to vaccines as well as any changes in receptor binding. For 82 pieces, we have characterized neuraminidaset in terms of resistance to antiviral and we have also characterized the NS-1 (a non-structural viral proteins, 31 of them) that may affect virulence.
For all strains h?magglutininet similar to that which exists in the vaccine. We did not find any change that is common in viruses derived from patients with severe disease. While the virus strains that come from vaccinated persons (5 pieces) equals the vaccine. No tribe has one of the mutations that induce resistance to neuraminidase inhibitors (Tamiflu and Relenza). No mutations known to affect virulence has been detected in NS-1. In addition to these sequencing, SMI also sequence-alloy matrix gene from 38 strains to validate the PCR system used for influenza A diagnosis. No changes were observed.

Influenza in the world, December 16, 2009

The increasing number of countries in the northern hemisphere seems now the current pandemic wave passing. Most countries in northern, western and even eastern Europe and in North America reported decreasing trends. Influenza activity continued to be seen in southern and southeastern Europe and parts of Central and East Asia.
Europe

Most countries in northwestern Europe have passed through the top, however, France still reporting high activity. Other countries that still report increasing trends, for example, Albania, Czech Republic, Greece, Hungary, Romania, Montenegro, Slovenia, Turkey. In Georgia, Bulgaria and Ukraine have been observed declining influenza notifications. Even in Russia seems to be peaking.
Africa

From the African continent is very limited data reported during the pandemic, although there is every reason to believe that the virus is still circulating in large parts of communities, with the exception of South Africa. In an article published in PLoS Medicine suggests researchers from Gabon and Germany on the major deficiencies in existing monitoring systems and argue that the contribution of influenza to morbidity and mortality in African countries need to be studied deeper.
H1N1 among indigenous peoples

MMWR reports on the indigenous peoples from Australia, Canada and New Zealand have shown a 4-8 times higher mortality and incidence of severe influenza infection (hospital) compared with other ethnic groups. The causes are still not fully understood. Increased prevalence of underlying diseases and other risk factors examined.

Inf?r den stundande helgen verkar det emellertid ganska lugnt, och vi tror att de flesta kan v?ga hoppas p? en influensafri jul. Virologi SMI har karakt?riserat 107 svenska stammar av den nya influensan. Av dessa var 9 fr?n ECMO patienter och 5 fr?n intensiv- eller respiratorv?rdade patienter samt 5 fr?n avlidna patienter. F?r 51 av dessa har vi karakt?riserat h?magglutininet med avseende p? vaccinlikhet samt eventuell f?r?ndrad receptorbindning. F?r 82 stycken har vi karakteriserat neuraminidaset med avseende p? resistens mot antiviralerna och vi har ocks? karakteriserat NS-1 (ett icke-strukturellt viral protein, 31 stycken) som kan p?verka virulensen. F?r samtliga stammar liknar h?magglutininet det som finns i vaccinet. Vi har inte hitta n?gon f?r?ndring som ?r gemensam i de virus som kommer fr?n patienter med sv?r sjukdom. ?ven de virusstammar som kommit fr?n vaccinerade personer (5 stycken) ?r lika vaccinet. Ingen stam har n?gon av de mutationer som inducerar resistens mot neuraminidash?mmarna (Tamiflu och Relenza). Ingen mutation som ?r k?nd f?r att p?verka virulensen har p?visats i NS-1. Ut?ver dessa sekvenseringar har SMI ?ven sekvenserat matrixgenen fr?n 38 stammar f?r att validera PCR systemet som anv?nds f?r influensa A diagnostiken. Inga f?r?ndringar p?visades. In total, in Sweden 10 873 cases now reported. During week 50 reported 162 new cases compared to 425 during week 49. J?mtland and Kronoberg had the highest incidence of about 5 cases per 100 000 inhabitants. No verified cases reported from Gotland and Blekinge. <br> <br>Hospitalization was reported for 18/162 (11 percent), a marginal increase over the previous weeks. A 72-year-old man with severe underlying disease died during the week (link). <br>Sentinel reporting on the proportion of influenza-like illness among patients who have sought to show that GPs 23/7142 (0.32 percent) reported patient visits were suspected influenza-like illness week 50 compared with 0.42 percent week 49. The percentage of positive samples in the sentinel samples fell to 8.50 percent and the number of searches on V?rdguiden was virtually unchanged from week 49. <br>In the population-based reporting in Stockholm, I'll report, the proportion of reports of respiratory infections, and influence-like illness as big as the previous week. Based on figures from the Hospital Report and sentinel sampling SMI estimates that between 4 000 and 10 000 people may have fallen ill with flu in the country during the week 50 and that between 240 000 and 612 000 people may have had the flu for weeks 38th Safety when on the last week's figures, however, is less than before, because they are based on few complaints and very few sentinel samples. <br>Despite the decline continued, there is still flu in Sweden. No tribe has one of the mutations that induce resistance to neuraminidase inhibitors (Tamiflu and Relenza). No mutations known to affect virulence has been detected in NS-1. In addition to these sequencing, SMI also sequence-alloy matrix gene from 38 strains to validate the PCR system used for influenza A diagnosis. Most countries in northern, western and even eastern Europe and in North America reported decreasing trends. Influenza activity continued to be seen in southern and southeastern Europe and parts of Central and East Asia. <br>Europe <br> <br>Most countries in northwestern Europe have passed through the top, however, France still reporting high activity. Other countries that still report increasing trends, for example, Albania, Czech Republic, Greece, Hungary, Romania, Montenegro, Slovenia, Turkey. In Georgia, Bulgaria and Ukraine have been observed declining influenza notifications. Even in Russia seems to be peaking. <br>Africa <br> <br>From the African continent is very limited data reported during the pandemic, although there is every reason to believe that the virus is still circulating in large parts of communities, with the exception of South Africa. J?mtland and Kronoberg had the highest incidence of about 5 cases per 100 000 inhabitants. No verified cases reported from Gotland and Blekinge. <br> <br>Hospitalization was reported for 18/162 (11 percent), a marginal increase over the previous weeks. A 72-year-old man with severe underlying disease died during the week (link). <br>Sentinel reporting on the proportion of influenza-like illness among patients who have sought to show that GPs 23/7142 (0.32 percent) reported patient visits were suspected influenza-like illness week 50 compared with 0.42 percent week 49. The percentage of positive samples in the sentinel samples fell to 8.50 percent and the number of searches on V?rdguiden was virtually unchanged from week 49. <br>In the population-based reporting in Stockholm, I'll report, the proportion of reports of respiratory infections, and influence-like illness as big as the previous week. We did not find any change that is common in viruses derived from patients with severe disease. While the virus strains that come from vaccinated persons (5 pieces) equals the vaccine. No tribe has one of the mutations that induce resistance to neuraminidase inhibitors (Tamiflu and Relenza). No mutations known to affect virulence has been detected in NS-1. In addition to these sequencing, SMI also sequence-alloy matrix gene from 38 strains to validate the PCR system used for influenza A diagnosis. Most countries in northern, western and even eastern Europe and in North America reported decreasing trends. Influenza activity continued to be seen in southern and southeastern Europe and parts of Central and East Asia. <br>Europe <br> <br>Most countries in northwestern Europe have passed through the top, however, France still reporting high activity. Other countries that still report increasing trends, for example, Albania, Czech Republic, Greece, Hungary, Romania, Montenegro, Slovenia, Turkey. In Georgia, Bulgaria and Ukraine have been observed declining influenza notifications. Even in Russia seems to be peaking. <br>Africa <br> <br>From the African continent is very limited data reported during the pandemic, although there is every reason to believe that the virus is still circulating in large parts of communities, with the exception of South Africa.
