Britain's first swine flu victim has said officials told him to keep quiet about attending a packed rock concert just days before being diagnosed.

Iain Askham, 27, and his wife Dawn, 25, became infected with the deadly virus on April 24 after returning from honeymoon in Cancun, Mexico.

But two days before they were put into isolation, Mr Askham went to see the Doves play for 1,500 people at the HMV Picture House in Edinburgh.

"I told them everything when I was in hospital," the IT worker, from Polmont, near Falkirk, told The People newspaper.

"They suggested it was best not to mention it to anyone else so as not to cause any panic."

Asked whether he thought it was the right decision to make, he said: "That's not something I want to comment on.

"It's been a worrying time. I hope things get back to normal soon."
The Scottish Government has defended its decision not to tell concert goers that Mr Askham attended the event.

"We are aware that Mr Askham did attend a concert on April 23 - before he was being treated - but this would not be classed as close contact," a government spokesperson said.

"The risk of spread to others who were around him is low, and it is important to stress that the risk to public health in Scotland remains low."

There are now three confirmed cases of swine flu in Scotland, Mr and Mrs Askham, and friend Graeme Pacitti, 24.

There are a further 12 confirmed cases in England.

The news comes on the same day as as a public information campaign has been launched to help explain the threat of the H1N1 virus and hygiene precautions to help limit the spread.

It is hard to understand the Scottish officials statement.

Our current understanding is that the virus can be spread by close contact of 6 feet as well as by actual contact.

I am not sure how many people go to a packed rock concert and aren't within 6 feet of each other.

One piece of information that we don't have yet is how long you need to be in exposed to an infected individual to become infected.

If the point is not to induce panic, then don't hide information.

Shocking absolutely schocking, It?s a scandal, this kind of behaviour from authorities is what makes people lose faith in them, and give reason for people to worrie even more, what a shame :(

Not to mention the medical aspect of their actions, taking away the posibility to detect other people who might have been infected at the concert by the SF positive cupple.
