Swine flu drops as monsoon retreats

With the monsoon withdrawing, the number of swine flu cases in the country has seen a sharp drop - to almost half the previous, an official spokesperson said in New Delhi on Tuesday. A total of 337 cases were reported from all parts of the country during the week ended Oct 2 as against 616
recorded during the previous week.

Tamil Nadu recorded the highest number of 72 cases, but no deaths, while Maharashtra recorded 61 cases and 17 deaths, the spokesperson said.

Cases are certainly down in Maharashtra, and some other States, but recent anomalies are throwing this whole count into doubt. Since Sep 7, the State reports from Rajasthan have recorded 53 confirmed fatalities of which only 2 have made it onto the consolidated status tally.

Tamil Nadu is still reporting only 7 fatalities, when the real number is now at least approaching 30. Why there is such a disconnect between the State and Central numbers is a mystery.
