Swine flu? It's just like a cold, says girl, 12

It may have killed in Mexico and infected hundreds of people worldwide, but one British schoolgirl says swine flu is no worse than the common cold.

Sophie De Dalis, 12, was sent home from school on Wednesday with a high temperature and was tested for the virus on Saturday.

She is one of six pupils from Alleyn's School in Dulwich, South London, to have contracted the deadly disease.

But by yesterday, she said she was feeling better and was resting up at her home.

Sophie said: 'I just felt like I had a cough and was under the weather. When I found out it was swine flu I was worried but really it just felt like a normal cold. I don't think it's anything to worry about.'

Her mother Felicity said she had a phone call from the school on Friday night alerting her to a swine flu outbreak.

She said: 'They swabbed all the children who had been ill that week but by the time the test was taken on Saturday Sophie was already feeling much better.'

The family were told yesterday that Sophie tested positive for the virus, but no one else in the family was suffering from any symptoms.

'We wouldn't have thought for a second that Sophie had swine flu,' said Mrs De Salis. 'She just felt under the weather and it was like any other illness.'

Sophie's sisters Alex, 17, and Katie, 14, also go to Alleyn's but have not been tested for swine flu.

Mrs De Salis, 48, said: 'We haven't been tested as a family, it's only the people who have shown symptoms that are getting swabbed.'

It is pretty obvious at this point that the hysteria early on was not necessary. The news media jumped all over this with their gloom and doom - this is it - stories. For most people they don't even realize they have anything more than a common cold or typical flu.

This is not the big one.

The fact that the media (and others) have shifted to "well it could be worse in the fall" type stories is a big red flag. Anytime groups start talking about the "next" wave - then you should start to wonder what is going on.

It wasn't as bad as they first thought. The hysteria was over the top. The media has started to move on now. It is still a story, but not like it was.

There is also the case of the 15YO W. Virginia girl who died from suspected SF.

This may be a good example of how response to this influenza varies according to the variable response of individuals' immune systems. All immune systems are not created nor functioning equally. Levels of the various cells involved in the process can vary by individual or from week-to-week for one individual.
