Swine flu: Jodhpur hospital shifts isolation ward into ICU

JODHPUR: In the wake of the three swine flu deaths here, the Mathrua Das Mathur Hospital administration has shifted the isolation ward into the
Intensive Care Unit to meet the emergency treatment requirements which cannot be done in the isolation ward. All three patients, who died in the past one week, were put on life -saving equipment and those arrangements had to be made in the isolation ward.
MDM's superintendent Prafulla Kachhawaha said all three patients had come to the hospital in a critical condition and were put on ventilators not usually available in isolation ward and have to be arranged from the ICU.
This is why we decided to shift the isolation ward into the ICU, Kachhawaha said. There is a new surgical ward at the hospital, which is to be inaugurated by the chief minister. However, Kachhawaha said, "We can open it for patients if needed without any formal inauguration considering the urgency.
Arvind Mathur, incharge of the isolation ward, said, "This is a temporary arrangement and we are in the process of developing a new ward for these suspects because the main concern is to keep them in isolation so that the spread of the virus can be arrested. A separate oxygen line is beign installed and as soon as it is ready, we will start using it as an isolation ward, Mathur said. He said that all these patients come with a respiratory failure and are immediately put on ventilators which are not available in the isolation ward.
The three deaths in Jodhpur have created panic in the city as earlier it was assumed that all the suspects who have contacted the disease were from outside Jodhpur. With the death of Suresh on Wednesday, this myth seems to have been shattered as he was living in Jodhpur itself.
