Re: Australia - Virus in Sidney Hospital
Re: Australia - Virus in Sidney Hospital
This thread below (not on FT) was apparently started by someone in Sydney whose sister is critically ill with a undiagnosed lung condition. Not that this is necessarily related, but with the lack of information, I figured I'd post it.
Of note is that this person is reporting that the sick individual has had frequent contact with flying foxes, the bats known as the reservoirs of Nipah and Hendra viruses. I would think that those viruses, with CFR's of more than 40% are unlikely to be responsible for the larger outbreak. Also, there is very limited spread of those viruses, so you wouldn't be seeing large numbers of people ill.
There is no mention of whether this individual has been tested for H1N1, or any other seasonal respiratory pathogens for that matter. The link also indicates that the ill woman has been on prednisone for months to treat pre-existing lung conditions, and has also taken some homeopathic supplements that they suspect may have contained something toxic.
And upon closer reading, onset may have occurred over many weeks or even months, so this is likely not be related at all, and may not be infectious or toxic. Some of the more recent posts seem to indicate that this might be an autoimmune condition (and note that fever is specifically excluded as a symptom in this woman).
