Health authorities warn of possible measles outbreak

The China Post news staff--Health authorities yesterday warned of a possible measles outbreak in Taipei City's Wenshan District and told the residents there to be on guard after confirming three cases.

A spokesman for Centers for Disease Control said genetic sequencing has tentatively confirmed a 28-year-old male Swiss student, a 20-year-old female Taiwanese student, and a one-year-old baby, all from Wenshan, have contracted the highly contagious respiratory diseases “from the same viral sources.”

The baby, who contracted the disease from the female college coed earlier this month, has been discharged from hospital in fair condition. Condition of the two grownups is not immediately known...

Taipei, March 15 (CNA) The national health agency reported one new case of measles and 10 cases of rubella Tuesday, and urged the public to get vaccinated for measles in an effort to prevent community infections.

A one-year-old boy in Taipei City was confirmed to be the third person this year to be infected with measles, a highly contagious viral illness, said the Centers for Disease Control (CDC)...

Health agency warns against upswing in imported cases of rubella

Taipei, April 12 (CNA) The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) said Tuesday there has been an upswing in the number of imported cases of rubella, or German measles, compared with last year, and it urged immigrant wives especially to get vaccinated before getting pregnant.

Of the 23 confirmed cases of German measles since January, 17 patients caught the disease abroad, more than the total of 11 imported cases reported last year, said CDC Deputy Director-General Chou Chih-hao,

Two of the patients were Vietnamese wives of Taiwan nationals, seven were Taiwanese tourists and the others were foreigners visiting Taiwan, according to Chou.

Eleven of the patients were infected in Vietnam, while others caught the disease in China, Malaysia, Thailand, Cambodia, and Germany. Their average age was in the late 30s.

Chou said that according to statistics, Vietnam in particular has seen an increase in the number of people infected with German measles in recent years...

Taiwan sees upswing in imported rubella cases

Taipei, May 3 (CNA) The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) said Tuesday that there has been an abnormal increase in the number of cases of imported rubella, or German measles, compared with the last three years, and urged people traveling to disease-prevalent areas to make sure they are vaccinated.

As of May 2, there had been 34 confirmed cases of rubella in Taiwan this year, of which 25 were contracted overseas, according to CDC Deputy Director Chou Chih-hao.

According to CDC statistics, only 11 or fewer imported cases of rubella had been reported annually since 2008.

He added that most patients were infected in Southeast Asian countries, including Vietnam, Malaysia, Thailand and Cambodia, with three cases contracted in China, Germany and Saudi Arabia...
