Enterovirus cases almost double as dengue cases rise

The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) yesterday urged the residents of Kaohsiung to bolster their mosquito-fighting measures after it confirmed a clustered dengue fever outbreak near the southern city?s Nanzih District (楠梓).

A total of six locally acquired cases of dengue fever were reported last week, five of which occurred in Kaohsiung?s Nanzih District, CDC Deputy Director-General Chou Jih-haw (周志浩) told reporters.

Three cases were confirmed in Longchang Borough (隆昌), two in Taichang Borough (泰昌) and one in Hongrong Borough (宏榮), Chou added...

Southern Taiwan sees dengue fever cluster

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- A cluster of five dengue fever cases were reported in southern Taiwan's Kaohsiung City last week, raising concerns that the disease has returned, despite subsiding earlier this year, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) said Saturday.

The patients, who live in city's Nanzi District, all had visited a local market, suspected by CDC officials to be a dengue fever-affected area.

Also, during the week of May 12-18, another indigenous dengue fever case was seen in the city's Cianjhen District, while two cases were imported from Indonesia, the agency said.

For Taiwan as a whole, a total of 108 indigenous cases of dengue fever were confirmed through May 18 so far this year, in a steady trend of decline since last November, according to CDC data...

Dengue fever cluster reported in Kaohsiung

Kaohsiung, June 11 (CNA) A dengue fever cluster was reported in Kaohsiung Thursday after three cases of the disease at the same locality were confirmed by local health authorities.

The three cases were found at the Nanzih Veterans Home where one 84-year-old resident, and two staff members, one of whom was living in the home, the other living in Gushan District of Kaohsiung, were diagnosed with the disease. All three cases are considered indigenous, said health officials...

Vigilance urged as dengue fever cases soar in southern Taiwan

Taipei, July 29 (CNA) The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) urged the public Wednesday to take precautions against dengue fever, as the number of cases of the mosquito-borne disease is escalating quickly in southern Taiwan.

Taiwan has reported 85 indigenous dengue fever cases during the week of July 21-27, compared with 38 in the previous week, according to the CDC.

The bulk of the reported cases were in southern Taiwan's Tainan municipality, which alone accounted for 78 new cases, while neighboring Kaohsiung reported six cases during the same period, the CDC said.

Taiwan has seen 216 indigenous dengue fever cases since May, with the ongoing hot and humid weather likely to increase the number, the agency warned...

Cases of dengue fever in Tainan rise to a new high

TAIPEI -- Tainan in Southern Taiwan reported 102 new dengue fever cases last week, a new high for the same period in nearly a decade, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) said Tuesday.

The CDC said that 124 cases were reported in Taiwan as a whole between July 28 and Aug. 3. Among them, 114 were indigenous cases, while 10 were imported, including six from the Philippines and one each from Indonesia, Vietnam, Thailand and Cambodia...

Tainan records second dengue death this year

Taipei, Aug. 18 (CNA) An 87-year-old man in Tainan has died of dengue fever, the second fatal case recorded in the southern city and in Taiwan this year, the Tainan Department of Health said Tuesday.

It said that since the start of the year, nearly 1,000 cases of dengue fever have been confirmed in Tainan, spread throughout 23 of the city's 37 districts.

On Aug. 10, the first dengue death of the year was recorded, a 73-year-old man in the city's South District...

The authorities in Taiwan are struggling to cope with an outbreak of dengue fever in the south of the island, according to a newspaper report.

More than 100 new cases of dengue fever have been reported everyday in the city of Tainan since Monday last week, the United Daily News said.

The outbreak has killed four people in the city, all elderly in their 70s who had chronic disease, Central News Agency reported on Tuesday, citing the city government.

Dengue infections lasting longer than before: doctor

TAIPEI--A specialist in Tainan said Monday that over 60 percent of patients who have contracted dengue fever this year had high temperatures that lasted for about a week, which is a longer average period than those recorded in previous dengue fever outbreaks.

Dengue fever cases top 6,000 across nation

TAIPEI -- The number of dengue fever cases recorded in Taiwan since the start of summer this year has increased to 6,312, with 88 percent of them reported in the southern municipality of Tainan, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) said Tuesday.

As of Monday, 5,586 infections had been reported in Tainan, an increase of 339 cases from the previous day.

The neighboring city of Kaohsiung had 635 cases, while other cities and counties had far fewer, CDC data show.

The CDC said that it would confirm the actual tally of dengue fever deaths out of 19 suspected dengue fatalities the following day, as the mosquito-borne disease continues to ravage southern Taiwan...

Taipei, Sept. 11 (CNA) The number of dengue fever cases recorded since the start of the summer in Taiwan has increased to 8,060, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) said Friday.

As of Thursday, 7,130 cases had been reported in the southern municipality of Tainan and 808 in neighboring Kaohsiung, according to CDC figures. The number of cases reported in these two major cities -- 7,938 -- accounts for nearly 98.5 percent of the national total.

In Tainan alone, the number of cases increased by 554, a new high for a single day, the CDC said. It increased by 507 over the previous 24-hour period.

TAIPEI -- The number of dengue fever cases recorded since May has increased to 12,766, with 98.33 percent occurring in Tainan and Kaohsiung, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) said on Sunday.

Of the 12,766 cases recorded, 9,608, or 75.26 percent, have recovered from the mosquito-borne disease, according to the CDC.

As of Saturday, 11,115 cases had been reported in Tainan, accounting for 87.07 percent of the total, an increase of 319 cases from the previous day, the CDC said...

Reported dengue cases drop, first time in 14 weeks

The Central Epidemic Command Center for dengue fever yesterday said the number of cases reported last week has dropped for the first time in 14 weeks since the outbreak began in May this year.

Centers for Disease Control (CDC) Deputy Director-General Chuang Jen-hsiang (莊人祥) said the number of confirmed dengue fever cases reported every week has continued to grow since May, but from Sunday last week to Saturday there were 2,920 cases, fewer than the 3,128 cases reported in the previous week.

There were still 260 suspected dengue fever cases reported in Tainan last week, but with a positive diagnosis rate of about 60 percent, if these cases were included in the reported cases last week the numbers would be the same as the week before, Chuang said.

Statistics released by the CDC yesterday showed an increase of 443 reported cases nationwide on Sunday, including 347 in Tainan, 89 in Kaohsiung and fewer in five other cities and counties, bringing the total number of reported cases to 13,209 since the beginning of the summer.

Chuang said figures from previous years showed that October and November were often the peak period for dengue fever cases, so the CDC is to continue to monitor changes in reported cases.

Any outbreak can only be considered stabilized if the number of newly reported cases drops for three consecutive weeks.
