Taipei, Nov. 25 (CNA)
A four-year-old girl in the southern county of Tainan has died of influenza A(H1N1) , the youngest patient to succumb to the new flu strain in Taiwan, health authorities said Tuesday.
The victim, who had no history of underlying disease, was treated with anti-viral drugs after coming down with the flu early this month, according to Chou Jih-haw, deputy director-general of the Centers for Disease Control.
However, she did not respond to treatment and died Nov. 22, Chou said, adding that she was the 30th fatality recorded in the country since the outbreak began and the sixth involving a child under 12.
According to Chou, the H1N1 strain is different from seasonal flu in that it tends to affect children more severely than the elderly, and he urged parents to have their children vaccinated as soon as possible.
