Influenza: Taiwan?s influenza epidemic situation has not worsened significantly. Although influenza type B virus is currently the dominant influenza virus strain circulating in the community according to the respiratory virus surveillance data, more and more confirmed cases caused by influenza type A (H3) virus have been reported. Taiwan CDC will be closely monitoring the epidemic situation.

Enterovirus:The overall ER consultation rate for enterovirus infection declined slightly this week after increasing continuously for two weeks, and the rate is lower than the epidemic threshold. Although coxsackie A virus is still the dominant enterovirus strain currently circulating in the community according to the virus surveillance data, detections of mild cases of enterovirus 71 and cases of enterovirus infection with severe complications have been reported recently.

Dengue Fever: Most of the indigenous cases of dengue fever that were confirmed this summer live in Lingya District, Kaohsiung City. Although the epidemic slightly slowed down during the past weeks, the number of confirmed cases increased continuously in San Min District, Kaohsiung City during the same period. The number of confirmed cases reported in San Min District was more than that in Lingya District during the past two weeks. In addition, more and more confirmed cases were reported in Cianjhen District and Fongshan District, Kaohsiung City, mainly in the townships between the two districts. Furthermore, geographic clusters of indigenous dengue fever cases have been reported in Taipei City, Penghu County, Tainan City and Pingtung County, and the number of confirmed cases continued to increase.

Influenza: The number of influenza cases in Taiwan began to increase slightly. As observed from the community respiratory virus surveillance data, the dominant virus switched from adenovirus into influenza virus during the 42nd week. Currently, influenza type B virus is the dominant influenza virus strain circulating in the community according to the respiratory virus surveillance data.

Dengue Fever: The trend of high numbers of dengue fever cases has not been reversed yet and local outbreaks have primarily occurred in Kaohsiung City, Penghu County and Pingtung County. So far, dengue activity has peaked twice, once during week 42 and once during week 43, and the epidemic has not reversed yet...

Enterovirus:The enterovirus infection epidemic has not decreased significantly...

Dengue Fever: The peak of this year?s dengue fever epidemic should have passed as the epidemic has been on a slow decline. Local outbreaks have primarily occurred in Kaohsiung City. The epidemics in Pingtung County, Penghu County and Tainan City seem to be slowing down.

Influenza: The overall level of influenza activity is beginning into peak, and the numbers of outpatient and emergency department visits, and hospitalizations for influenza in Taiwan continue to increase. Influenza type B virus is the dominant influenza virus strain circulating in the community.

Enterovirus:The enterovirus 71 infection epidemic has been on the rise. The ER consultation rate for hand-foot-and-mouth disease has remained high, and the threat of enterovirus 71 still persists as mild cases of enterovirus 71 and cases of enterovirus infection with severe complications have still been detected.

Dengue Fever: Although the dengue fever epidemic has been slowing down, Taiwan CDC continues to closely monitor the epidemic in Kaohsiung City. Sporadic cases in Pingtung County and Tainan City have still been reported.

During week 52, influenza activity increased in Taiwan, and seasonal influenza virus type B is predominant in the community.

Of the 421 specimens tested during week 50, 168 (40%) were positive for influenza viruses, 160 (38%) were positive for influenza B viruses, 8 (2%) were positive for influenza AH3 viruses.

There were 72 new complicated influenza infections and 5 reports of death from complicated influenza infection during week 52. Since July 1, 2011, 295 complicated influenza infections have been confirmed, including 211 cases from influenza B virus infection, 75 cases from influenza A virus infection, 7 cases from pandemic (H1N1) 2009 virus infection and 2 case due to un-typed influenza A virus infection. 99 cases of complicated influenza infections received the intensive care. Since July 1, 2011, there have been 14 reports of death from complicated influenza infection; 5 from the seasonal H3N2 strain and 9 from the seasonal influenza B strain, respectively.

The number of deaths related to pneumonia and influenza during week 51 was 292, which was above the number of the previous week (236 deaths).

The rate of outpatient visits for influenza-like illness is 1.890%, a 14.8% increase compared with the previous week (1.61%).

The rate of emergency room visits for ILI is 15.90%, a 21.7% increase compared with the previous week (13.07%).

Antigenic characterization: Taiwan CDC has antigenically characterized 221 human influenza viruses [2 pandemic (H1N1) 2009, 28 influenza A (H3), 191 influenza B] since July 1, 2011. 92.9% (n=26) of the influenza A (H3N2) viruses tested were related to the A (H3N2) vaccine component (A/Perth/16/2009). 18.3% (n=35) of the influenza B viruses tested belonged to the B/Victoria lineage and were related to the B component of the 2011-12 influenza vaccine (B/Brisbane/60/2008).

The number of deaths related to P&I for age groups 0–49, 50–64, and greater than 65 years was the highest for adult greater than 65 years of age.

Of the 474 specimens tested during week 51, 2011, 224 (47%) were positive for influenza viruses, 209 (44%) were positive for influenza B viruses, 14 (3%) were positive for influenza AH3 viruses, 1 (<1%) was positive for un-typed influenza A virus.

There were 147 new complicated influenza infections and 6 reports of death from complicated influenza infection during week 1. Since July 1, 2011, 442 complicated influenza infections have been confirmed, including 337 cases from influenza B virus infection, 94 cases from influenza A virus infection, 8 cases from pandemic (H1N1) 2009 virus infection and 3 cases due to un-typed influenza A virus infection. 145 cases of complicated influenza infections received the intensive care. Since July 1, 2011, there have been 20 reports of death from complicated influenza infection; 7 from the seasonal H3N2 strain and 13 from the seasonal influenza B strain, respectively.

The number of deaths related to pneumonia and influenza during week 52 was 306, which was comparable with the number of the previous week (305 deaths).

The rate of outpatient visits for influenza-like illness is 2.27%, a 18.8% increase compared with the previous week (1.91%).
The rate of emergency room visits for ILI is 19.08%, a 19.6% increase compared with the previous week (15.95%).


92.9% (n=26) of the influenza A (H3N2) viruses tested were related to the A (H3N2) vaccine component (A/Perth/16/2009). 16.8% (n=35) of the influenza B viruses tested belonged to the B/Victoria lineage and were related to the B component of the 2011-12 influenza vaccine (B/Brisbane/60/2008).

Influenza activity in Taiwan peaked at week 2; however, the rate of emergency room visits for influenza-like illness continued to increase because clinics had been closed over the Chinese New Year holidays. The rate of emergency room visits for influenza-like illness is expected to decrease gradually when clinics reopen after the holidays. Seasonal influenza virus type B is predominant in the community.

Of the 416 specimens tested during week 2, 2012, 201 (48%) were positive for influenza viruses, 180 (43%) were positive for influenza B viruses, 15 (4%) were positive for influenza AH3 viruses, 5 (1%) was positive for pandemic (H1N1) 2009 virus, 1 (<1%) was positive for un-typed influenza A virus.

There were 108 new complicated influenza infections and 10 reports of death from complicated influenza infection during week 4. Since July 1, 2011, 845 complicated influenza infections have been confirmed, including 677 cases from influenza B virus infection, 136 cases from influenza A virus infection, 21 cases from pandemic (H1N1) 2009 virus infection and 11 cases due to un-typed influenza A virus infection. 281 cases of complicated influenza infections received the intensive care. Since July 1, 2011, there have been 46 reports of death from complicated influenza infection; 35 from the seasonal influenza B strain, 10 from the seasonal H3N2 strain and 1 from the un-typed influenza A virus, respectively.

The number of deaths related to pneumonia and influenza during week 3 was 344, which was below the number of the previous week (350 deaths).

The rate of outpatient visits for influenza-like illness is 3.36%, a 40% increase compared with the previous week (2.40%).

The rate of emergency room visits for ILI is 24.44%, a 37.5% increase compared with the previous week (17.78%).

Of the 337 specimens tested during week 3, 2012, 173 (51%) were positive for influenza viruses, 158 (47%) were positive for influenza B viruses, 8 (2%) were positive for influenza AH3 viruses, 7 (2%) was positive for pandemic (H1N1) 2009 virus.

There were 128 new complicated influenza infections and 8 reports of death from complicated influenza infection during week 5. Since July 1, 2011, 973 complicated influenza infections have been confirmed, including 788 cases from influenza B virus infection, 150 cases from influenza A virus infection, 26 cases from pandemic (H1N1) 2009 virus infection and 9 cases due to un-typed influenza A virus infection. 317 cases of complicated influenza infections received the intensive care. Since July 1, 2011, there
have been 54 reports of death from complicated influenza infection; 42 from the seasonal influenza B strain, 10 from the seasonal H3N2 strain, 1 from pandemic (H1N1) 2009 virus infection and 1 from the un-typed influenza A virus, respectively.


The number of deaths related to pneumonia and influenza during week 4 was 355, which was below the number of the previous week (361 deaths).

The rate of outpatient visits for influenza-like illness is 2.09%, a 37.6% decrease compared with the rate of the Chinese New Year holidays (3.35%).
The rate of emergency room visits for ILI is 16.53%, a 32.1 % decrease compared with the rate of the Chinese New Year holidays (24.34%).

There were 92 new complicated influenza infections and 10 reports of death from complicated influenza infection during week 6. Since July 1, 2011, 1065 complicated influenza infections have been confirmed, including 856 cases from influenza B virus infection, 165 cases from influenza A virus infection, 33 cases from pandemic (H1N1) 2009 virus infection and 11 cases due to un-typed influenza A virus infection. 357 cases of complicated influenza infections received the intensive care. Since July 1, 2011, there have been 64 reports of death from complicated influenza infection; 50 from the seasonal influenza B strain, 12 from the seasonal H3N2 strain, 1 from pandemic (H1N1) 2009 virus infection and 1 from the un-typed influenza A
virus, respectively.


The number of deaths related to pneumonia and influenza during week 5 was 361, which was above the number of the previous week (359 deaths).

The rate of outpatient visits for influenza-like illness is 1.84%, a 12% decrease compared with the rate of previous week (2.09%).

The rate of emergency room visits for ILI is 14.3%, a 13.5 % decrease compared with the rate of previous week (16.53%).

Week 7:
Influenza activity in Taiwan peaked at week 2. Seasonal influenza virus type B is predominant in the community.

Of the 206 specimens tested during week 5, 2012, 74 (36%) were positive for influenza viruses, 64 (31%) were positive for influenza B viruses, 8 (4%) were positive for influenza AH3 viruses, 2 (1%) were positive for pandemic (H1N1) 2009 virus.

There were 58 new complicated influenza infections and 8 reports of death from complicated influenza infection during week 7. Since July 1, 2011, 1123 complicated influenza infections have been confirmed, including 891 cases from influenza B virus infection, 178 cases from influenza A virus infection, 42 cases from pandemic (H1N1) 2009 virus infection and 12 cases due to un-typed influenza A virus infection. 376 cases of complicated influenza infections received the intensive care. Since July 1, 2011, there have been 72 reports of death from complicated influenza infection; 57 from the seasonal influenza B strain, 13 from the seasonal H3N2 strain, 1 from pandemic (H1N1) 2009 virus infection and 1 from the un-typed influenza A virus, respectively.

The number of deaths related to pneumonia and influenza during week 6 was 383, which was above the number of the previous week (369 deaths).

The rate of outpatient visits for influenza-like illness is 1.72%, a 6.5% decrease compared with the rate of previous week (1.84%).

The rate of emergency room visits for ILI is 13.63%, a 4.7 % decrease compared with the rate of previous week (14.3%).

Antigenic characterization: Taiwan CDC has antigenically characterized 315 human influenza viruses [2 pandemic (H1N1) 2009, 36 influenza A (H3), 277 influenza B] since July 1, 2011. 94.4% (n=34) of the influenza A (H3N2) viruses tested were related to the A (H3N2) vaccine component (A/Perth/16/2009). 13.4% (n=37) of the influenza B viruses tested belonged to the B/Victoria lineage and were related to the B component of the 2011-12 influenza vaccine (B/Brisbane/60/2008).
