Taiwan records third H1N1 fatality

TAITUNG, Taiwan -- Taiwan's health authorities reported the country's third influenza A(H1N1) fatality Friday, a student from the eastern county of Taitung.

The 24-year-old man, who had not traveled overseas, came down with flu symptoms Aug. 11, a day after he returned home from a round-the-island tour that had been cut short because of Typhoon Morakot, said Lu Chiao-yang, head of Taitung County's Public Health Bureau.

He sought treatment at the Taitung Christian Hospital, where he tested negative for the new strain of influenza, Lu said.

Three days after he was hospitalized, the patient developed pneumonia and was transferred to the Mackay Memorial Hospital Taitung Branch, Lu went on.

The results of a second flu test on the patient released Thursday showed that he had been infected with A(H1N1), Lu said.

The patient's condition worsened and he died early the following morning.

The bureau examined his family and those who had traveled with him on the round-the-island tour, including a group of 51 children, all of whom were uninfected.
