Taiwan reports influenza deaths

Taipei, Dec. 16 (CNA) Two more people in Taiwan have died of influenza, the Department of Health (DOH) said Thursday.

Two women, one 58 and the other 38, died in the past week, about seven days after falling ill with symptoms that included coughs and fever, said Lin Ting, Deputy Director-General of the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) under the DOH.

The younger woman tested positive for the A/H3 flu virus, while the virus strain in the other infection has not yet been determined, Lin said.

The deaths could have occurred as a result of other existing diseases, Lin added. The two women were not in the priority groups to receive free flu vaccines and they had not been inoculated, he said. The priority groups include people over 65, patients in care homes, and children aged six months to 10 years.

Further tests are needed to determine whether the women had developed bacterial infections after they contracted the flu virus, Lin said.

As of July, a total of 34 people in Taiwan had died of influenza this year, Lin said.

Hospitals witness five-week rise in flu patients: CDC

The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) yesterday said the number of hospital visits for flu symptoms have risen for five consecutive weeks and that 15 new severe cases have come to light in the past week, showing that the country has officially entered the peak flu season.

Not only has the number of outpatients and emergency visits resulting from flu and flu-like symptoms been on the rise for five straight weeks, hospitals across the country have seen huge increases in the number of emergency visits, CDC Deputy Director-General Lin Ting (林頂) said.
Last week, the number of emergency visits totaled roughly 4,000, a 10 percent increase from the previous week and a 23 percent increase from two weeks ago, Lin said.

Lin added that in the past month, officials monitoring the flu situation have found that about two in every three people with flu symptoms were affected by the A(H1N1) flu virus.

The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) yesterday said four people have died from A(H1N1), or swine flu, and 222 new cases of severe seasonal flu were reported in the past week, raising fears of a worsening situation as the nation heads into festivities for the Lunar New Year holidays.

The CDC said 73 percent of virus-induced respiratory illnesses involved seasonal influenza, with the main strain being H1N1.

Of the 222 newly reported cases of seasonal flu, 195 were A(H1N1), showing that the outbreak is still going strong, CDC Deputy Director-General Lin Ting (林頂) said...
